Another rich chapter in history of parish
ALMOST 100 copies of the second Oylegate Glenbrien Parish Journal were sold on its launch night which was held in Oylegate community centre.
The 100-page journal was launched by Alan Marr and Paraic McManus to a large crowd. It contains 91 writings, including historical essays and articles on local schools and sports.
Essays featured in the journal include one by Marian Downes regarding Oylegate’s connection to the 1916 Rising.
Meanwhile, Paraic McManus wrote an article on The Quakers. A topical approach was taken by Tom Millar, who penned a piece on the Enniscorthy bypass and the effects it may or may not have on the local people.
Other articles include ‘Memories of Sinnott’s Shop in Oylegate’; ‘ The Lost Community of Ballyvake Lane’; ‘Athletics in the Oylegate Glenbrien area’; ‘ The Slaney Regatta’; ‘Glenbrien Hurlers Win Senior Double’; ‘Brownswood Castle’ and ‘Farnatrane House’.
The price of the journal is €10 and copies are available in Freeman’s and Garry’s shop in Oylegate, in the Old School Centre in Glenbrien and in Doyle’s shop in Ballymurn.
The journal is the second of its kind, with the last one published in 2014.
‘It was a great night and we had a good crowd out,’ said Tom Millar, a member of the six-strong Oylgate Glenbrien Parish Journal committee. ‘We plan to do one every second year as this will give us enough time to research and gather information.’
In 2008, the ‘Oylegate Glenbrien: A Look Back in Time’ book was published and it sold out in three weeks.
Owing to its success, the Oylegate Glenbrien Journal Committee is now considering ordering a reprint of the book, possibly in soft cover. They are currently taking orders for copies and the closing date for ordering a book is January 15 2017.
