There were two rededication ceremonies in Enniscorthy last week to reflect the correct spelling of Captain Thomas Wafer.

Earlier this year it was discovered that the correct spelling of Captain Wafer’s name was Wafer not Weafer as originally thought.

As a result of this both Weafer Street in Enniscorthy town and the Thomas Weafer Memorial Hall in Springvalley were both renamed last week to correctly honour Captain Wafer.

District manager Padraig O’Gorman said the rededication of Wafer Street which took place last Tuesday had been a great success.

‘It went really well for us. The late Captain Wafer’s granddaughter Moira Riddick and her husband Mike came over from the UK for the ceremonies which was great.

‘Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Cllr Oliver Walsh said a few words to mark the rededication while Mark O’Brien, author of a book on Captain Wafer, also gave a brief synopsis of Captain Wafer’s life.

‘ The rededication ceremonies were probably the last events of the 1916 commemorative programme.’

On Monday last the Captain Wafer Memorial Hall was also renamed. Committee chairman Paddy Wildes said
