RATHNURE STALWART Michael Foley has been honoured with the clubperson of the year award.

The choice of the clubs was announced by Vice-Chairperson, Marguerite Furlong, at the annual Coiste na nOg Convention in the Ferrycarrig Hotel on Monday of last week.

She said that having played all grades of hurling for his club down through the years, Michael continued his involvement with the club through under-age level for the past 16 years.

One of his main talents is to encourage new young players and guardians to become involved with the club, while he has also been involved in a major contribution to the main indoor arena.

The Vice-Chairperson said she had great pleasure in announcing Michael Foley as clubperson of the year.

Cloughbawn, who enjoyed such success on the playing fields, were announced as the club of the year.

Four clubs shared second place, namely Davidstown-Courtnacuddy, Blackwater, Our Lady’s Island/St. Fintan’s and Rapparees-Starlights.

The Vice-Chairperson also announced a special award which went to the Faythe Harriers club for winning the All-Ireland Féile na nGael hurling competition, defeating the renowned Cork outfit, Glen Rovers, in the final.

She said she had been in Tipperary for the Féile, and she was in Cloughjordan when the Harriers took on Roscrea who were wearing red.

There was a little pocket of purple and gold support too, and on that occasion the Wexford town club powered over Roscrea, hammering the Tipperary side.

It was on to Semple Stadium then and the hallowed ground, where the early nerves were overcome as they put paid to Ballygunner.

Next morning it was the final where they beat Glen Rovers of Cork.

To mark the occasion she asked the Faythe Harriers club to step forward for a special presentation which was accepted by their delegate, Pat Henebery.

He thanked the Vice-Chairperson for her generous words while also thanking the clubs and everyone for their support and words of congratulations.

He said it was a great occasion for the Faythe Harriers club and a great occasion for Wexford.
