Great success for Wexford

Model county sides shine

- SCÓR NA NÓG at Allenwood, Kildare

WEXFORD HAD great success in the Scór na nÓg Leinster semi-final in Allenwood, Co. Kildare, recently.

All competitors represented their county with pride and four groups were successful in qualifying for the Leinster final in January.

Unfortunately, despite good performances from our soloists, Kayleigh Moran (Bannow-Ballymitty) in the solo singing and Oulart-The Ballagh’s Declan Sinnott in the recitation competition, neither was lucky enough to qualify for the Leinster final.

Figure dancers from Cloughbawn (Aoibhinn Cooper, Nathan McDonald, Lisa Murphy, Brídín Quigley, Jamie Cummins, Caoimhe Quigley, Cormac Cooper and Aoife Fleming) performed excellently and it was a great achievement for the boys and girls to qualify for the Leinster final as this is the first year that they entered the competition.

Naomh Éanna’s ballad group gave a beautiful rendition of ‘Red is the Rose’ and ‘The Spanish Lady’, and Tara Cushe, Tara O’Connor, Leah O’Mahoney, Lauren Purcell and Mollie Carroll will again represent the county in the Leinster final in Ballymore, Co. Westmeath, on January 7.

Bannow-Ballymitty club managed to qualify in two categories. The instrumental musicians (Cian O’Grady, Jane Rossiter, Caoimhe Moran, Kiera Reville and Callie Bennett) gave an uplifting performance of ‘Christy Barry’s Jig’ and ‘The Gravelwalks Reel’.

Finally, Bannow-Ballymitty’s léiriú entitled ‘Welcoming Davy to Wexford’ was also successful. Those who performed this entertaining act were Jane Rossiter, Michael Harpur, Siobhán Rossiter, Niamh Colfer, Aaron Hogan and Caoimhe Moran. Best of luck to all the acts in the Leinster final.
