Division 3 side dump Benfica out of the cup

Fastnet Rovers 2, Benfica LFC 1: Fastnet Rovers caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of the league when they knocked five times cup winners Benfica out of this year’s competition and have earned a trip to All Blacks as their reward in the second round.

The Waterford side have been struggling all season and currently sit bottom of the Premier Division but it would still have been expected that they would overcome the Division 3 side. Andrea Holmes was on target for Benfica but goals from Eadaoin Miskella and Lorraine Breen earned Rovers a place in the history books.

St. Leonards 7, New Ross Town 1: The home side earned a home tie against North End United in the second round after this good win over New Ross Town in a game that was closely contested until the final 25 minutes when St. Leonards’ superior fitness came to the fore. Sandra Murphy was on target for Town but two goals each from Fiona Ryan and Eimear Gabbett plus one each from Alex Holden, Chloe Banville and Aoife Drennan put the Ballycullane side through.

Women’s Premier Division

Curracloe United 0, Ferns United 4: Ferns made it three wins from three games and moved to second in the table after this 4-0 win away to Curracloe United.

Goals from Leona Breen, Liz Evered, Rachel Collier and Georgina Moore gave the away side an important three points that moves them into a strong position heading into the Christmas break.

Women’s Division 2A

Camolin Celtic 10, Cloughbawn AFC 2: Camolin collected their first three points of the season and inflicted the first defeat on Cloughbawn as they ran out surprising 10-2 winners.

Tina Cullen and Gina Foley were on target for the visitors but goals from Aoife Curran (four), Caroline Murphy (three), Katie Keogh (two) and Niamh O’Leary gave Camolin victory.

Women’s Division 2B

Shelburne FC 1, Courtown Hibs 2: Courtown recorded their sixth win of the season to sit second in the table heading into Christmas although they had to work hard for the three points against a hard-working Shelburne side. Kate Devereux scored for the home side while Sonia Redmond and Sarah Lynch were on target for Hibs.
