Virgin Media now offering free WiFi in Market Square
A BROAD range of businesses were represented in The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, recently, as Virgin Media announced its first public WiFi zone in Market Square.
The event, organised by Enniscorthy and District Chamber, saw representatives from the company explain its plans for the town.
Chamber CEO Catriona Murphy said that people were particularly interested to hear if the company has plans to provide service to the Old Dublin Road as it isn’t served by fibre.
She said the company delivered ‘a direct ask’ from the Chamber to provide free WiFi access to visitors and locals in the Market Square. ‘It is trusted we can together extend on these services to include the Promenade to Templeshannon area; taking in the bus stop, train station and the current main routes,’ she stated.
They were also told the company has targeted the Old Dublin Road as a potential area to roll-out early next year. ‘This is a very significant project for the Chamber members and businesses on the Old Dublin Road and will empower these businesses greatly,’ she stated.
John Burke O’Leary, Chamber president, welcomed Virgin Media to the Enniscorthy business community and as a new member of the Chamber.
‘Quality broadband infrastructure and media services are critical to attracting businesses and tal- ent, so we are delighted to note that the broadband download speeds of up to 400Mbps, which are now available in Enniscorthy, are among the very best in Ireland,’ he said.
He added that Enniscorthy is also one of the first towns in Ireland to benefit from free public WiFi.
‘Now more than ever, businesses recognise the importance of an online mobile presence to grow their company,’ he commented. ‘Enniscorthy is set for much infrastructural change in the coming two to four years with the bypass and flood defence scheme; Virgin Media has recognised that Enniscorthy has the infrastructure and potential to double in size. We call on investors and government representatives to take note of this and show similar foresight and confidence in Enniscorthy.’
