TEENAGERS ALLEGEDLY BROKE DOWN INTERIOR WALLS OF CARE HOME

-

TWO young residents of a care home in North Wexford were responsible for wrecking the place, the District Court was told.

The District Court sitting in Gorey heard the prosecution case against a 17-year-old who was staying at the home earlier this year.

The gardaí were called to deal with reports received early on the morning of September 11, 2016 of a disturbance.

It was alleged that, on arrival, the defendant and one other retreated from an office downstairs.

They then, according to Sergeant Gary Rayner, trashed the premises on the first floor.

They threw shower fittings out the window and broke down interior walls, said the sergeant.

The emergency response unit was called out and one of the unit’s officers was injured as they attempted to re-establish order.

The damage caused was put by the sergeant at approximately €40,000 worth.

It was further alleged that the same 17-year-old was also involved in a previous incident three days earlier in which a kitchen door and skylight were damaged.

The court was told that the accused climbed out on to the roof and began throwing tiles.

Judge Gerard Haughton ruled that the matter would have to be dealt with by the Circuit Court, adjourning to December 21 for preparation of a book of evidence.

The defendant was remanded in custody in the meantime.
