Cian earns place in national orchestra
SIXTEEN-YEAR- OLD Gorey student Cian Dwyer has earned a place in the National Youth Orchestra.
Cian, son of Patrick and Sorcha, and a student at Gorey Community School, has learnt violin with Teresa Doyle in Ballygarrett since he was seven years old. He has completed grade eight, the highest level, with distinction.
He was a member of the North Wexford Youth Orchestra before moving on to the Wexford Sinfonia, and he has also been a member of the Dublin Youth Orchestra for the past two years.
Teresa explained that an opportunity arose to apply for the National Youth Orchestra, and there were sixty applications for the first violin section, and Cian was one of the thirty players who were accepted.
He will give his first public performance with the National Youth Orchestra in the National Concert Hall on January 8 next, when they play ‘ The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens, and Shostakovich ‘Symphony No 5’.
‘I’ve gotten used to the success of my students, but this is in a whole new league,’ said Teresa. ‘It’s mind-blowing to see a young man so motivated. He would arrive in and say “this is the music I need”, and he’d have rehearsed most of it on his own.’
She said that he was encouraged by his friends to apply for the National Youth Orchestra. Teresa added that his family has been very supportive, driving him to various concerts. The orchestra is expected to travel in the summer.
