Malcolm urges county to make capital of culture bid

-

GOREY councillor Malcolm Byrne has called for Wexford to bid to become Ireland’s first County of Culture in 2018.

This is a newly announced Government programme that will support counties in showcasing their artistic endeavours and excellence over a 12-month period.

He welcomed the Creative Ireland plan which was published on Thursday last week, and in particular, the greater role envisaged for arts in the community supported by the local authorities.

‘Credit where credit is due,’ he said. ‘ The Government have set out a plan that finally focuses on the enormous possibilities of the arts and Wexford is in an ideal place to contribute and to benefit.’

‘We should build on the work as part of the Three Sisters campaign and stake our just claim to be Ireland’s County of Culture,’ he said. ‘ This is a county rich in artistic heritage but also great emerging creative and innovative work.’

He was due to raise the issue at Monday’s County Council meeting.

‘We have to ensure that this is more than lip service,’ he added. ‘ Too often, the arts are praised for their contribution to our communities and to society, as well as to the economy but the resourcing doesn’t always match the eloquence of reports or words.’

The report, and the section on Counties of Culture, can be accessed through the creative. ireland.ie website.
