Let it Die teeming with unrealised potential

-

LET it Die is a strange beast. On one hand, it is can be thought of as a free-to-play ‘Roguelike’ game with some fun mechanics and a bizzare aesthetic.

On the other, it is a pretty crappy reimagining of Dark Souls/ Bloodborne with some blatantly predatory microtransactions thrown in for good measure.

The game world in Let it Die is seperated into two distinct areas. Most of the game’s charm is in the hub, which I became very fond of.

This is where you can slowly improve your character between runs, and just generally hang out.

It is clear that the developers spent a lot of time crafting this area and obsessing over the finer details.

All the more odd then, that the actual dungeon-crawling aspect is riddled with problems and ripe with tedium.

Layouts are far too similar and linear. While there may be a random element to the designs, a large amount of structures and key areas are repeated for any given floor of the tower, and there is just too high a frequency of beige-looking tunnels and corridors.

Combat is a massive let down in Let it Die. The developers decision to use to PS4 touchbad for items is just absurd.

Many times you will find yourself eating explosive mushrooms, or just missing an item entirely because you’ve flicked past it using a pretty crap touch pad that was never meant to be used for critical ‘ heat of the moment’ items.

The combat itself is a little clunky. But even a ‘ little clunky’ in these types of games feels like an incredible hindrance.

When combat replies on hair-trigger reflexes then even the slightest sluggishness in a game can ruin the experience.

Too many times I found myself stun-locked by my enemies due to the game not being smooth or fast enough to allow me to dodge out of it.

Let it Die is absolutely teeming with unrealised potential. At the moment, Let it Die is set in an absolutely fascinating world riddled with bizzare curiosities and a real charm.

Unfortunately, there are simply too many flaws in the gameplay to really enjoy it for any length of time.
