Enniscorthy Drama Group ready to hit the ground running

- with Maria Nolan

As the curtain falls on an extremely busy and enjoyable year of drama, the Enniscorthy Drama Group has hit the ground running with plans well under way to entertain and wow audiences in 2017. Last year was hugely successful for the group, staging the classic Playboy of the Western World, the comedy The Lost Weekend, the dark and sombre A Whistle in the Dark and of course the specially commissioned play by Paul O’Reilly A Night on the Hill – written about Enniscorthy 1916 for the 2016 commemorations.

At their recent AGM the group decided to take the well -eceived, compelling piece of drama A Whistle in the Dark on the festival circuit, with a slightly different cast of Michael Whelan as Dada, Rob McEvoy as Michael, Fintan Kelly as Harry, Myles Mullally as Iggy, Brendan Robinson as Des, Alan Kinsella as Hugo and Anne Marie Whelan as Betty. Beginning at Carlow’s George Bernard Shaw Theatre on Saturday February 18, the cast will play Doonbeg on Sunday March 5, Portadown on Tuesday March 7, Ballyduff, Co Waterford on Wednesday March 8 and Scariff, Co Clare on Thursday March 23.

Meanwhile the group’s actors are deep into rehearsals for the Martin McDonagh classic The Cripple of Inishmaan due to appear on an Enniscorthy stage at the end of March. This brilliant comedy sees James Freeman as The Cripple, John O’Gorman as Johnny pateen mike, Gemma Delaney as Helen, Alan Kinsella as Bartley, Julie Fox as Kate, Joanne McCabe as Eileen, Fintan Kelly as Babby bobby, Joe Doyle as Doctor McSharry and Anne Marie Whelan as Mammy.

So a lot to look forward to already and EDG would like to take this opportunity to extend their most sincere thanks to the people of Enniscorthy and beyond for their tremendous support and encouragement of the arts in 2016 and anticipate seeing you all again in 2017.
