GAA BIGGEST LOSER

If you over-indulged during the Christmas season or if you just want to get slim, trim and brimful of energy, why not join in the GAA club’s fundraisin­g fitness iniative as they once again organise a ‘Biggest Loser’ competitio­n. The 2017 version will start on Friday, January 13, with an initial weighin in the clubhouse in Monageer.

Like last year, the fundraiser will involve a bog-run, a long-distance cycle and a road race. The bog-run will take place on February 3 with the cycle race on February 17 and the five mile run on March 3. The final weigh-in will be on March 10. Already team from Boolavogue, Tinnacross/Knocknasge­ach, Knockduff/Clondaw, Monageer, Craan/Lr. Tomsollagh, Killabeg/Upper Tomsollagh, and have declared. Leaders have been chosen but if you wish to enter a team, contact Mary Carton at 087 9569533 or Podge Stafford at 087 0505370.

Over the past few years, the annual ‘Biggest Loser’ has proved to be a great way to lose wieght, get fit and meet lots of people in community. To help with training, the club’s walking track lights are lit from 5.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. each evening

HOSPICE FUNDRAISER

After much deliberati­on, having consuted his notes and the other match officials, the referee eventually decided that the Junior ‘A’ football team were the winners, by a sigle point, over the Junior ‘B’ team in the annual Liam Cooper Tournament, played in Monageer on St Stephen’s Day.

Róisín Cooney, Liam’s daughter, was on hand to present the cup to Mick Sweeney the victorious captain and she thanked all who took part and helped organised the event. Afterwards, as refresheme­ns were being served in the Monageer Tavern, the raffle prizes were drawn and Keith Swaine won the first prize, a hamper. Darina Canavan won a bottle of brandy as did Joe Long of Ballyhogue. Joe Hayes and Ray Kehoe won a bottle of whiskey each with Mick Rossiter and Catherine Clare each winning a bottle of wine. Niall Kehoe, Erin Fortune and PJ Folan all won boxes of chocolates. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, almost €930 was raised for the Wexford Hospice Home Care.

PARENT/TODDLER GROUP

Any parent with a preschool child is welcome to come along an join the group which meets each Wednesday in Boolavogue Hall at 9.30 a.m. The group’s first meeting of 2017 will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at 9.30 a.m.

MINISTERS OF EUCHARIST

On Thursday, January 5, the eve of the feast of the Epiphany, Geraldine Doyle is the Minister of the Eucharist on duty in St Cormac’s with Dorothy Hall helping distribute Communion at the 11 a.m. Mass on the Holy day itself, January 6. Ann Whelan will be the Minister of the Eucharist on duty at the vigil Mass on Saturday night, the seventh. at 8 p.m. with Catherine Gahan helping at the Sunday Mass at 11 a.m.

The readers on duty are Catherine Whelan at the Vigil Mass on Thursday night, Gaye Gahan at 11 a.m. on Friday for the Holy Day, Rosaleen Gahan at the Vigil Mass on Saturday night and Marie Barne at the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, January 8.

SOCCER NEWS

The committee of St Cormac’s would like to thank all the club’s supporters, Facebook followers, coaches, parents and guardians, mentors and players for all the hard work and support so far this season, and wish all a happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. The season restarts this weekend of January 7 and eight 2017 with a round of cup matches.

SOCCER FUNDRAISER

St Cormac’s are raffling a package that includes tickets to the Manchester Utd. Vs West Bromwich Albion game in April 2017. Tickets for the draw cost €10 and the prize includes coach travel, ferry crossing and two nights accomodati­on as well as the tickets. All committee members will be selling the tickets from this weekend and they’d be delighted to sell you at least one.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON CLUB

The Tuesday Afternoon Club will resume on January 10, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Fr Murphy Center and new members are always welcome.

GAA LOTTO RESULTS

The jackpot survived the Christmas draw and has been increased to €8,300 for its next outing which will be on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at 9.30 p.m. in the New Clubhouse in Monageer. The numbers that came up in the last draw were, 2, 15, 21 and 24. Three tickets held by Micheál and Ann Stafford, Órla Gahan and Adam Power as well as Liam Dunbar had three of the numbers and shared the matchthree prize.

In the special Christmas draw, the sellers’ prizes went to Mary Mitten and John Carton while the lucky dips were won by Mary Foley, Michael Rowsome, JMBB and Micheál and Ann Stafford.
