Darren’s coma tragedy inspires charity walk
A young Screen man who has been in a coma since suffering head injuries in a devastating quad bike accident eight months ago is the inspiration for a major fundraising event taking place in aid of Wexford General Hospital.
Darren Corrigan has not woken up since the accident which happened in a field near his home on June 23 2016 shortly before his 21st birthday which he spent in hospital.
The popular youth has undergone a series of surgeries in Beaumont Hospital, the most recent taking place last week, and he has also spent extended periods of time in Wexford General Hospital. His family and friends are keeping an ongoing vigil by his bedside.
The past months have been a heartbreaking ordeal for the Corrigan family as they wait and pray for a breakthrough in his condition. Darren had just recently taken over running the family business, C&C building providers and hardware store in Screen owned by his parents Colm, a building contractor, and Marissa, a native of Camolin, when the ac- cident occurred, as he drove through a field on his way to meet a friend.
A fit and talented sportsman, he played with Blackwater GAA and Curracloe Soccer Club. His fellow players recently voted to make him captain of Blackwater hurling team .
Pat Ennis who manages Freddie’s Bar in Screen has organised ‘A 5km Walk and a Prayer’ for Darren on Curracloe Beach on Saturday, March 4 at 5 pm, followed by a barbecue, auction, a raffle and music in the pub afterwards.
People are invited to take part and to contribute to the fundraiser with all proceeds going to Wexford General Hospital where Darren has been receiving specialist care and treatment.
Pat said his initial intention was to organise a small fundraiser but it has snowballed into a massive event thanks to the generosity and support of a large number of people who want to get involved. ‘Every single thing is being donated or sponsored from the barbecue to the auction and the music,’ he said.
