HOW SARAH, CLAIRE AND PADRAIG ARE GETTING ON

-

SARAH NIC CRAITH (10KM)

My first two weeks training have flown by, and have been a lot different than I expected. I had hoped to get five runs in and one being a long run but unfortunately work got in the way. The first week of training I managed five runs of approximately 4-5 km but the second week I only finished four runs averaging about 4 km. Balancing work, other commitments and running has been tricky.

Following my programme to the letter has been tough but I’ve changed it a little to suit me better. I’ve found that I’m really enjoying running now even in the rain. Any previous injury which I thought would be a problem hasn’t troubled me and I’ve managed all the sessions without any pain.

I took on my first ever running event on the Quays in Wexford on Thursday February 2 for the Night Run. It was a rotten night with strong winds making the cold bitter and some lovely heavy rain showers. There was a huge turnout and a great atmosphere at the start line which made it all the more bearable. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would and it certainly didn’t deter me from future races! Still on track for Sunday April 23.

CLAIRE MOLLOY (10KM)

On Thursday February 2 I took part in the 5k Night Run in Wexford Town. What a night it was. The rain was coming down but that didn’t matter. I would like to say a huge well done to all the 6th class children from Kennedy Park Primary School, their families and the teachers who also took part in the run. While training for the 10k I have decided to go out and try new things so I said I would give Yoga a try.

Classes fit in perfectly for me as they are on a Friday morning from 10am-11.30am in Wexford Gymnastics Club in Coolcotts. Classes are given by the wonderful Vivian Brodie Hayes. Viv has an amazing way of making my mind and body feel calm. As my training progresses I would like to be able to fit in another Yoga class, Vivian does one Saturday mornings from 8am - 9am as well so maybe I might try to fit that in.

I also went to a fitness class that is being put on for free in Kennedy Park School for all parents of the children. It’s Tuesdays at 12.45 and is run by Kevin Cogley. The class was once again something different for me to do and I really enjoyed it even if my body ached a day or two later. I will be back next Tuesday for more, it is great to do something with a group of people and I have to say Anne and Angie kept me laughing threw the class so thanks ladies. I feel like my running sessions are on course for the 10k. Most of the runs I have been out doing are 5k.

PÁDRAIG DORAN (HALF MARATHON)

The last two weeks were disappointing; I only got out three times. One of those was with David Doyle from Templeludigan, part time farmer, part time personal trainer. He had me running up the mountains while driving a tractor behind me, I think he taught he was like something from a Rocky movie or something. They may be used to training like that up in Carlow but I think I’ll stick to the flat roads of Wexford. The man nearly killed me.

I’ll have to get out more over the next few weeks. I can’t change the past but all I can do is improve the future. Between the bad weather and a slight touch of the man flu they slowed me down. But if I do live through the man flu I will get a lot more nights running in.

The new healthy eating and the cut back on the red wine has certainly added a few extra miles that I’m able to run. With the evenings starting to stretch a bit now I should be able to do a few runs on Duncannon beach. Onwards and upwards.
