Liam remembered in style

Bumper programme of action during Walsh Memorial

A GREAT night of boxing was held in the Riverbank House Hotel recently.

Hosted by the local St. Ibar’s/St. Joseph’s club, it was the second Liam Walsh Memorial event.

Liam, who passed away in 2014, was founder of the club and was fondly remembered by all present.

A total of 15 bouts were down for decision, with the opener won by Ryan Doyle of St. Ibar’s who beat Logan Whelan from the Sacre Coeur club in Enniscorth­y.

Other winners were: John Connors of Na Fianna who beat Luke Kennedy of Gorey; Kian Kelly of St. Mary’s (New Ross) who beat Tom Murphy (St. Ibar’s); Stephen Doyle (Na Fianna) who beat Lee Byrne (Gorey); Francis Baxter (Gorey) who beat Ashton Morris (St. Ibar’s); David Kinsella (St. Anthony’s) who beat James Cullen (Ballagh); Ben Murphy (St. Ibar’s) who beat Aaron Browne (Sacre Coeur); Jake Travers (St. Ibar’s) who beat Jake Cox (Enniscorth­y Boxing Academy); Patrick Whelan (St. Mary’s, New Ross) who beat Ryan Warren (St. Ibar’s); Michael Kinsella (St. Anthony’s) who beat Willie Bolger (Ferns); Jack Murphy (St. Ibar’s) who beat Adam Kinsella (St. Mary’s, New Ross); Joe Whelan (St. Ibar’s) who beat Michael Moorehouse (Enniskerry).

Three elite bouts also took place, with Myles Casey (Limerick) beating Jason Kirwan (Ballagh), followed by an exhibition between Seán Allen (Arklow) and Darren O’Neill (Kilkenny).

The last fight on the card featured Dean Walsh of St. Ibar’s, Liam’s grandson and European elite bronze medal winner, who beat Evan Fitzgerald from Esker in preparatio­n for the nationals.

Albert Saunders, Chairman of St. Ibar’s club, presented the home boxer award to Jack Murphy and the best visiting boxer accolade to Kian Kelly of St. Mary’s (New Ross).

He also thanked boxers, coaches and officials for attending, and paid tribute to all the sponsors for their generosity.
