Shocks and surprises in second round of cups

-

IT WAS second round weekend in the Wexford and District Schoolboys Soccer Cups, with a smattering of shocks and surprises through three age-groups.

Newpark United produced the performance of the round in the Under-11 Cup, knocking out a Curracloe United A side which has won all eight of its league games this season.

The victors won by the odd goal in three to set up a third round clash with Division 1 high-fliers Cloughbawn.

The Clonroche side had to fight all the way for their own place in the last 16. Division 3A leaders The Ballagh pushed the top team in the county right to the brink before going down 3-2 in an epic tussle.

Fellow Division 3A side Wexford Bohs added their second surprise in a row.

Following on from their statement win over St. Joseph’s in the opening round, Bohs dispatched Forth Celtic B of Division 3, 4-1 after extra-time.

Gorey Rangers, New Ross Town and Forth Celtic A, all of Divi- sion 1, advanced without a scare. Wexford Celtic and North End United A also moved into round three, along with lower division clubs Oylegate, Shelburne and Corach Ramblers. Bridge Rovers A and B both prevailed in delayed round one ties.

League action was thin on the ground but it did prove to be a special day for Cushinstown in Division 4.

They picked up their first point of the season in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Gorey Rangers B.

There were four ties in the Un- der-13 Cup. It was a great day for Wexford Celtic, with their A side beating St. Joseph’s 4-1 at home and their B team going to Ferns and shocking their hosts 3-2.

Elsewhere, Forth Celtic fired four past Campile to book a spot opposite All Blacks in the last 16. Moyne made the short trip to Boolavogue and came away with a 4-0 win, and they will meet Fethard in the next round.

Wexford Albion moved ten points clear at the summit of Division 1 with victory over Gorey Celtic. All Blacks look like the most likely challengers, twelve points behind with four games in hand after a win against Glynn Barntown.

New Ross Town moved within a point of the Division 2 title after a crushing victory over Rosslare Rangers.

Shelburne drew their third game of the season in Division 2A but it was enough to move them five points clear of Oylegate. In Division 3, Gorey Celtic B joined Forth Celtic B at the summit with a 1-0 win over the Murrintown side.

The final Under-15 Cup round one tie saw Kilmore surprise Adamstown in Newbawn. The big shock in the second round was St. Cormac’s 4-0 success at home to Division 1A side St. Leonards. Wins were also recorded by Gorey Rangers A, North End, Wexford Albion, Campile, Ballymurn Celtic and Cloughbawn.

Forth Celtic edged clear at the summit in Division 1 with a 2-1 win at Bree.

Finally, Enniscorthy Town stretched their lead to six points in Division 2 with a hard-earned win over Gorey Celtic.
