Wearing junk is fashionable

-

TRANSITION year students from Meanscoil Gharman hosted their annual Junk Kouture fashion show in the Ferrycarrig Hotel, where seven unique dresses were modelled on the cat walk.

Each year the students create dresses based on recycled materials and then submit their dresses as entries for the national Junk Kouture competition.

The competition encourages young designers in second level education to create striking designs and impressive works of wearable art from everyday rubbish that normally gets thrown into the bin.

Not only did the students display their art work, but others provided entertainment with dance and musical acts during the show.

Last year two of the dresses made it to the regional semi finals, with one getting to the final in the 3arena, so this year’s creations had a hard act to follow.

The students used a wide range of different materials, from old Christmas cards to seatbelts.

‘We cut and weaved 80 seatbelts together to create our dress, and glued the rim of a car wheel and old window-wipers to a headband to make our headpiece,’ said student Niamh Tennant.

Teacher Clare Kavanagh said the students’ work incredibly hard to put on a show and this year was undoubtedly no exception and was a huge success for all of those involved. Rosie Whelehan from Enniscorthy.
