Photographers think outside the box
On Saturday March 4 I was delighted to be asked to open Switch – a photographic exhibition with a difference at Bunclody Library. Switch is an exhibiton of experimental photography by four amazingly creative photographers – Dick Donaghue from Galway, Marja van Kampen from the Netherlands, Hannah B from Cork and Zuzana Sukopova from Slovakia, all now living in Enniscorthy and Bunclody.
The four have taken photographs of ordinary items or groups of items and passed them through various filters and techniques to produce something completely new and different and even abstract. Each of the 20 manipulated pieces on display are unique and astounding in their intensity and composition – their beauty, energy and vibrancy transforms them from mere photographs to works of art.
The man behind the idea of this experimental photography group is Dick Donaghue. A native of Galway, Dick has been involved with the arts almost all of his life. An author, artist, playwright, journalist, photographer and even film maker, Dick has worked with the Galway Arts Centre, Macnas, Galway Theatre and the Film Resource Centre.
Dick has inspired the group to think outside the box, to see everything from a different perspective, he has encouraged them to think differently about photography and taking photographs.
This is an experimental journey that morphs the ordinary into the extraordinary and will appeal to amateur and professional photographers alike.
This art form is new and exciting, absorbing and fascinating and above all visually appealing – each of these pieces would adorn any wall and are very reasonably priced, so do call into Bunclody Library and view them for yourself.
