ROSSLARE LADIES

Last Tuesday was novel and a fun day’s golf, a yellow ball team event. Each player of three took their turn to drive with the yellow ball. If you had the yellow ball you could score double stableford points.

The best score was then taken from the other two players. If you lost the yellow ball it meant no more double scores, so the pressure was on if you were driving with the yellow ball.

Also we all had to watch who had what shots on which holes with the different handicaps to maximize the double scoring on your drive with the yellow ball. The mental game of golf took on a new meaning.

Well done to Valerie Doyle, our lady Captain Doreen McGovern, and vice lady Captain Norrie Goff on coming first.

Envelopes are out, and sheets up, in the ladies’ locker room to enter new season club competitions.

The Ring competition starts on March 21. The Nancy Todd singles and fourball matchplay closing date is April 1, with draws being done on April 5.

Tuesday, March 14, will be our first 18-hole competition, a team of three sponsored by Selskar Bookshop.

Tuesday, February 28, yellow ball team event: 1, Valerie Doyle (10/7), Doreen McGovern (12/8), Norrie Goff (20/12), 77; 2, Val Mernagh (15/10), Margie O’Connor (18/12), Bernie Riordan (29/19), 72.

WEXFORD

We had a big turn-out for the annual Captains’ drive-in on Sunday. Our four Captains for this year - Tony O’Neill, Una Doherty, Caoilfhionn Doyle and Seán Hopkins - did not disappoint the large crowd when each in turn got excellent drives off to celebrate their year in office. Best of luck to all four Captains.

We got all competitions played despite the poor weather. Wednesday’s fourball was won by the talented duo of Andrew O’Brien and Laurance Carley with 38 points. Kenny and Tommy along with Big P and Small P took a wrong turn on the course, but a new sat nav and some golf buddies have been ordered from the Pro Shop for future competitions.

Friday’s competition was a three-person team event and, having stayed on course this time, it was won by Pat ‘Kenny’ Walsh, Tommy Hynes and Jackie Molloy with 66 points.

Saturday’s 14-hole fourball was won by Michael Callinan and Mick Whelan with 37 points.

Sunday’s competition was the Captains’ drive-in champagne scramble and was won by John O’Brien, Darrenn Robinson, Lar Gainfort and Trevor Healy with 84 points. In second place were Aiden Murphy, Richard Walsh, Derek Murphy and Tony Lynn with 82 points (back eight).

In third place were Phil Murphy, Paul Kavanagh, Thomas Reddy and Seamus Thomas on 82 points (back four).

The Senior section held their weekly competition on Tuesday, and the winner was Aiden Cogley with 33 points. Second place went to Ger Cashman with 29 points, and in third place was Jim Lenihan on 28 points.

The Seniors will have an outing to New Ross on April 10, and those intending to go should inform any committee member.

The last Find the Joker winner was Carmel Murphy. It is only €2 to enter the Joker draw and the jackpot is now almost €1,300.
