Man had no funds to pay for €3,200 bill at Monart Spa
A MAN who extended his stay in Monart, upgraded to a suite, built up a bill of €3,200 and then said he couldn’t pay it, appeared before Judge John Cheatle at Gorey District Court last week.
Thirty-year-old David Marsh of 41 Glenvara Park, Knocklyon, Dublin 16, was charged with obtaining services by deception from Monart Health Spa, Enniscorthy, between June 24 and 28, 2016.
His five-night B&B stay, with food, drinks, and various spa treatments, came to €3,208.90.
Judge John Cheatle was given various reports to read.
Sgt Gary Rayner told him the defendant initially booked in for two nights, after which he extended his stay and upgraded to a suite.
After using the hotel’s spa facilities, and eating there, he was approached to pay, and he said he didn’t have any money to pay for it.
He had previous convictions for causing loss by deception, and he received nine months in prison for those.
His barrister said the re- ports outlined various medical problems and psychiatric difficulties. She added that he had a marketing certificate and a business degree and had worked in the UK.
She said at this time, he was awaiting a custodial sentence from the circuit court. ‘He accepts the offence entirely, and he’s very ashamed,’ she said. ‘He is currently in prison and is doing very well.’
She said that he is currently in the Midlands Prison and hopes to go to Shelton Abbey soon.
Judge Cheatle remanded him on bail until May 9, 2018, and said at that stage, he would give him a six-month sentence, suspended for 12 months. He also made a compensation order for the money to be repaid over 18 months.
