Doyle boxes clever in Leinster win
NA FIANNA might be among the newer clubs on the boxing scene, but already they have produced a very promising pugilist in young Stephen Doyle.
The telented 15-year-old from Maudlintown completed a tremendous treble recently, winning the county championship and Michael Andrews Memorial titles before adding a provincial crown for good measure.
Competing in the Junior 1 grade, Doyle defeated Lee Byrne from Gorey in the county final and was triumphant against J.J. Byrne from Tullow in the Michael Andrews decider, an event regarded with great importance in Wexford as it honours the memory of a fine young boxer from Ferns.
Doyle then turned his attention to the Leinster championship where he followed up a semi-final win against Michael Maher of St. John Bosco with a victory over Mylie Connors from Kilcullen in the decider held in Athy.
Stephen’s consistent displays have earned him a place on the Leinster high performance team, and all of his attention is now on the All-Irelands to be held in a fortnight in the National Stadium.
It has been a great season so far for the Na Fianna club, with another Stephen Doyle, an Under-18 fighter, having qualified for the All-Ireland Novice semi-final.
So far club representatives have won eight leagues, eight county titles, one Leinster and two Michael Andrews titles, with the second annexed by Nicole Scallan-O’Brien.
