BLACK WATER SOCIETY

We will be kicking off our outings for 2017 on Friday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) in Blackwater golf course, with the first tee-time of 10 a.m.

All members and new members wishing to join our society are asked to attend.

We are looking forward to a great year of golfing.

WEXFORD LADIES

Unfortunat­ely there was no golf on Saturday, March 4, or Monday, March 6.

The first 18-hole competitio­n of the year, on Thursday, March 9, was sponsored by Viking Glass. A total of 51 ladies played.

Results: 1, Margaret Hearne (15), 39 points; 2, Theresa Kehoe (15), 36 points; 3, Patricia Boyd (21), 32 points (back nine); gross, Tara Dunne (3), 26 points; Senior, Carmel Murphy (7), 31 points.

The nine-hole competitio­n was won was by Eileen Humphries (14) with 12 points. Nearest the pin was Helen Robinson, 12 ft. 3 ins.

The presentati­on of prizes will take place on Thursday, March 23.

This week’s competitio­n on Thursday, March 16, is an 18-hole singles stableford.

For those looking for some fun on St. Patrick’s Day, there is a three-person team event (choker format) on Friday.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Last Tuesday was our final winter competitio­n over 16 holes and we were delighted to see our ‘little treasure’ (ex-Treasurer Mary Barry) coming first with 32 points.

In hot pursuit was our other star, Handicap Secretary and low handicappe­r, Niamh Byrne, coming second with 31 points. Well done ladies.

Sunday, March 5, was the final of our winter league, and everyone was on the final march, scrambling around in the rain and wind.

Those who had been in the lead from the start - the team of Norrie Goff, Carol O’Brien and their gentlemen team-mates couldn’t be beaten, winning with 240 points.

Second were Eleanor Wardlaw and Susan Evans plus team with 237.5 points, and third were Máire Farrell and Karen O’Keeffe plus team with 229.5 points.

Other ladies featuring in the prizes were Niamh Byrne (best singles), Joan Bowe with Martin Buggy (best fourball), Cathy Atkinson and Anne Connolly (in the best six-person scramble team), and Bernadette Cuddihy in the best three-person scramble team.

Many thanks to our profession­al Jamie O’Sullivan and gang for organising this fun event which got many of us out playing in the harshest weather of the year. Full results are on the website.

This is St. Patrick’s weekend with lots of golf and inhouse fun: Friday, March 17, team of four any combinatio­n; Saturday, March 18, ladies’ and gents’ open fourball; Sunday, March 19, gents’ singles and ladies’ alternate day; Thurs, March 16, quiz at 7.30 p.m.; Friday, March 17, music from 5-7 p.m. in the clubhouse - all are welcome with the restaurant in full swing.

On Tuesday, March 21, from 6.30-7.30 p.m. in the clubhouse, all ladies are welcome to come to our meeting for those wishing to participat­e in the ladies’ golf taster session, and eight-week programme for €50.

Tuesday, March 21, is a singles stableford competitio­n sponsored by Liam Riordan (Sherwood’s Pharmacy).

Congratula­tions to the last winner of the Find the Joker, Peter Rice.

Entry to the draw is only €2, and the jackpot this week is in excess of €1,300.

The annual winter league came to a conslusion in Rosslare on Sunday and proved a tremendous success, with 17 teams of six players taking part. Great credit is due to the two Jamies in the Pro Shop for their organisati­on.

Last weekend saw the first 18-hole competitio­n of the year, with play reverting to the summer course.

Next weekend is a very busy one. On Friday (St. Patrick’s Day) there is a Team of 4 - any combinatio­n.

On Saturday there is a Ladies Fourball and a Gents Fourball and on Sunday there is a Gents Singles. All the above competitio­ns are open to Visitors paying Green Fees

The Annual Boys Internatio­nal between Ireland and Wales takes place on Saturday and Sunday next.

The Fred Daly competitio­n begins on Saturday at 2.00pm. This year the format is changed. The team is reduced from seven to five. There is no qualifying round with match play the format all through. On Saturday we play Wexford with three matches away and two at home.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Eavan Barnes on the death of her husband Enda, to Jimmy Dempsey on the death of his wife Mary and to Tommy and Patsy Byrne on the death of their sister Mary.

May they rest in peace.
