DONARD NS have been crowned the national winners of the 26th annual All Ireland Credit Union Schools Quiz in the U11 category.

Pupils Shane Kehoe, Leah Murphy, Bridin Quigley and Cormac Fleming wowed judges, scoring 52 out of 60 in the quiz to claim the top prize on Sunday at the RDS in Dublin. The quiz masters came first out of 48 teams from across the country having qualified from the County Wexford heats.

They began their quiz journey in January, practicing out of school hours, brushing up on their general knowledge skills by reading newspapers.

Donard NS Principal Sinead Parnell said: ‘It was a fantastic, beautiful day and a great day out for them. We are so proud of the pupils, as are the whole school community. The amount of phone calls we’ve had today has been amazing.’

Ms Parnell said each of the pupils have their own individual skills, adding that combined together they made a formidable team.

Representing Enniscorthy Credit Union, whose officials visited the school in the run up to the event, the team came second to Oylegate NS in the first heats before winning in the Chapter 9 final in Gorey outright where they came up against teams from south Wicklow, Carlow and from across County Wexford.

On Sunday at the RDS the new Credit Union Youth Ambassadors, sporting heroes Gary and Paul O’Donovan, were on hand to put the finalists at ease with an inspiring pre- Quiz pep talk. The hotly contested event is run by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) each year and attracts more than 25,000 participants across numerous age categories.
