Coolgreany derlict house development

-

The long running saga of a derelict property on Coolgreany’s Main Street has moved a step closer to conclusion, as no objections were lodged against Wexford County Council’s intention to compulsorily acquire it.

Cllr Malcolm Byrne, who has campaigned since 2009 for the building to be handed over for community use, welcomed the latest step. ‘For four decades, the building stood empty in the heart of Coolgreany and there appeared to be no owner,’ he said. ‘We thought that it was finally ready to be acquired by the Council for the community in 2014, but it hit a snag.’

‘At last, however, the CPO process is almost complete,’ he continued. ‘ The Council will shortly enter discussions with community groups in the area as to how it will be managed into the future.’

After publication of the notice of intention to acquire the site by CPO, the closing date for receipt of objections was April 4. None were received.

‘ The next stage in the process will be to proceed to vest the property in the ownership of Wexford County Council,’ said Malcolm. ‘Once the vesting process is complete and our solicitors have registered the Council as owners of the property, the Council will then be free to consider future uses of the property.’

He said the building is structurally sound but that considerable work has to be done on the inside to make it suitable for use.
