Day two of track and field tests

THE MR Oil Co. Wexford Juvenile and Senior track and field hammer and discus competitions were hosted by D.M.P. on Friday at their grounds on Sinnottstown Lane.

The one thing upon which everyone in attendance can agree was that it was a most inclement evening.

Day two of the Mr Oil Co. Wexford Juvenile track and field championships took place in Enniscorthy on Sunday. Once again there was a great turn-out of ath- letes and spectators.

The competition was no less fierce than the previous weekend. On the basis of the performances generally in this year’s championships, we have reason to look forward with much optimism to next month’s Leinsters.

The Tón Le Gaoithe sprints meet took place at Waterford R.S.C. on Saturday.

Leon Reid and Ronnie Wells, both Menapians, looked pretty sharp over 100m, running 10.26 and 10.45 respectively.

Their talented young clubmate, David McDonald, ran 10.72.

Two of the county’s top up-andcoming female sprinters, Aoife Cloke-Rochford (Bree) and April Keeling (Menapians) looked very good over 100m.

Indeed, Menapians showed their sprinting strength in depth with Mel O’Callaghan, Ciarán Maher, Shaun Donohue, Adrian Jackman, Kenneth Malone, Aaron Tierney-Smith and Ruth Bowe all having a go.

Noteworthy on the field events side were U.S.A.C’s Joshua Hewlitt and D.M.P’s Peter O’Shea, both of whom had a good series of throws in the javelin.
