The Pierce Purcell team battled hard up in Roundwood on Saturday in tough conditions but came up short of qualifying for the matchplay on Sunday. Well done to our neighbours Courtown for taking fourth place.

COURTOWN

It is good to see that all matches have now been played in the preliminary and first rounds of the club matchplays. Please note that the next round for singles is to be completed by June 19, with the fourball to be completed by June 26. It may seem like a lot of time to arrange a match, but with holiday season upon us time slips by very quickly.

Out Pierce Purcell shield team members were out over the weekend and qualified in fourth place on Saturday, but fortune did not favour them on Sunday morning when they were beaten by Wicklow Golf Club.

Our Pierce Purcell team members were in action in a wet and windy Gowran Park in the regional qualifiers last Saturday. Unfortunately, we were unlucky with the timing of the draw and ended up playing in the more difficult weather conditions on the day.

Despite this we only missed out on qualifying for Sunday’s matchplay stage by three strokes. Hard luck to the players who put in a valiant effort, namely David Boland, Dick Britton, Dan Byrne, Nicky Cahill, Paddy Fitzpatrick, Ger Flood, Ray Hutchinson, Peter O’Shea, Chris Timmons, Ger Turner and in particular to manager Ed Morrison.

Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce had a very successful classic at the club last Friday. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but that didn’t deter dozens of players from turning up.

Results: 1, Paddy Fitzpatrick (14), Frankie Morrissey (9), James Morrissey (6) and Mick Rossiter (18), 57.3 points; 2, Dan Conroy (28), Paul Conroy (5), Joe Kavanagh (28) and Jim Pepper (22), 57.7 points; 3, Damien Byrne (17), Jim Byrne (12), Eddie Doyle (6) and Tommy O’Rourke (25), 59.9 points.

In the non-G.U.I. section the winners were Dave Clerkin (24), John Dempsey (19), Seán Fox (20) and John O’Sullivan (19) with 61.8 points. Nearest the pin was Paddy Fitzpatrick (8’), and longest drives were Marie Connell and Garry Lynch. See you all again next year hopefully.

The winner of the last split the pot was John Ryan who won €105.

The club singles and club fourball competitions will be starting again shortly. All matches will be off the whites this year. Entry is €5 per person and entry forms are in the Pro Shop.

A 9/10 handicap will apply to the fourball. The draw for the fourball was held last Saturday and some eagerly-awaited clashes are due to take place.

Calling all soccer clubs in the county. We are hosting a soccer clubs golf tournament on Saturday, June 3, the same day as the Champions League final, for all soccer clubs that play in the Wexford League.

This includes men’s, ladies and their referees too. We are looking for four representatives from each club to play in both a combined singles and team event. The best three scores form the team result and there will be singles prizes too for the best players.

Please reply to the e-mails that have already been sent out by May 20 in order to register your team.
