60TH ANNIVERSAR­Y

The 60th anniversar­y of soccer in Boolavogue will be celebrated in the Upton Court in Kilmuckrid­ge on Friday, May 26. Seven of the players who took part in the first game played by the club will be among the guests. This game was played in Chapman’s field, beside where Boolavogue NS now stands, against a team from the St Patrick’s Boxing club in Enniscorth­y, a team that eventually became Eniscorthy Towns FC.

The Boolavogue team, which include many members of the Boolavogue Boxing club, was known as Boolavogue United and they won their first game by 1-0, with Séamus Kirwin getting the historic first score. Boolavogue United, soon renamed St Cormac’s AFC, played in the Carlow and Wicklow league for around 10 years before joining the Wexford league.

POOL TOURNAMENT/BBQ

On Sunday, May 28, there will be a pool tournament in the Harrow, starting at 3 p.m. The tournament is open to everyone and all funds raised will go to ‘Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland’. This tournament will be followed by a barbecue and music session starting at 6 p.m. Various bands and music stars will be performing and the fun will go on till late.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

Congratula­tions to all the children in second class in Boolavogue National school who made their First Holy Communion in St Cormac’s Church on Sunday, May 14. They were blessed with great weather for their special day.

DEVELOPMEN­T COMMITTEE

At the meeting in Boolavogue Hall on Monday, May 8, a committee was formed to help develop amenities in the areas. The committee which includes, among others, Barry Turner, Dermott Breen, Cormac O’Loughlin, Davina O’Reilly, Maria O’Loughlin and Olive Burke hope to develop preschool facilities and a children’s play area in Boolavogue.

GAA NEWS

The club’s under-16 footballer­s and hurlers, amalgamate­d with Oylegate/Glenbrien and now know as Slaney Gaels, continue to notch up some very impressive successes. On Monday the 15th. the footballer­s beat Cloughbawn by 5-9 to 2-2 while the hurlers overwhelme­d Ferns on Thursday night, the 18th. by 9-26 to 0-4 in their Roinn 1A clash.

On Sunday the 14th. the under-12 footballer­s had a great win over Adamstown, winning by 4-12 to 3-2, despite being short a few regulars due to the First Holy Communion taking place that day.

On Friday last, May 19, the Rackard League hurlers took to the field in Ballygarre­tt against Kilanerin in the district final. Trailing at half-time, a great goal from Matt Gahan put Kilanerin under pressure. But they were able to hold on to their lead with their goalie pulling off a great save near the end of the game. Of the panel of 28, 18 will be eligible to play for the team next year and they hope to do well thanks to the great experience they gained this year. Everyone involved with the teams would like to thank Ms Walsh and Mr Dempsey for all the hard work they put into the team this season.

Everyone in the GAA club and Boolavogue National school would like to wish Mr Dempsey every success in his new appointmen­t as Principal in St Enda’s NS, Ballycanew.

CÚL CAMP

The GAA summer Cúl Camp will be run in Monageer again this year and will run from July 31 to August 4. The camp will teach the skills of football, hurling and camogie. The cost for the first child is €60 with €50 the fee for a second child. All siblings after that only cost €40 each and every participan­t will get Kellog’s GAA Cúl Camp gear including a jersey, training top and backpack. MINISTERS OF THE WORD

On Saturday night, May 27, Rosaleen Gahan is reading at the Vigil Mass with Marie Barne reading at the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday morning. Minister for the Eucharist at the Vigil Mass is Georgina Gahan with Dorothy Hall assisting at Communion on Sunday, May 28.

CHARITY CYCLE

Make sure you up your train- ing schedule for the annual Charity Cycle in aid of Our Lady’s Hospital for children, Crumlin, which will take place on Monday, June 5, the Bank Holiday Monday. If you are interested in taking part, sponsorshi­p cards are available from Josie Gahan, Tinnacross.

GAA LOTTO

As there was no outright winner in the last Monageer-Boolavogue lotto draw, the jackpot has been increased to €9,300. The next draw will take place in the New Clubhouse in Monageer on Tuesday, May 30, at 9.30 p.m. Although no one had picked 1, 13, 22 and 24 in the last draw, Frank Cox had three of these numbers and won the €160 match-three prize.

SOCCER AGM

On Monday, May 15, the AGM of St Cormac’s AFC was held in the clubhouse. Phil Christophi was returned as chairperso­n while John Farrington is once again secretary. Mark Ellix is the treasurer for the coming season and Mags Ellix is the club’s Child protection officer.

SOCCER NEWS

The under-12 girls’ team played their last game of the season on Friday last, drawing 2-2 with Bridge Rovers after a thrilling game. This brought and end to a very successful season for the team which finised in second place in the league. The club hopes to build on this success by fielding an under-14 girls’ team next season. The competitio­n would involve an 11-a-side format and parents of interested players should contact call Séamus Doran at 087 9240092.

SOCCER CAMP

St Cormac’s will be hosting a soccer summer school this summer from the 10th. to July 14 inclusive. The soccer school will cater for boys and girls from six to 14 years of age and will cost €65 per child. Each participan­t will recieve an exclusive kit, a backpack, a football and a certificat­e. There is a €10 discount for each additional sibling. Anyone, who wishes to participat­e should book as early as possible as the cost rises to €75 nearer the date of the camp.

AFTERNOON TEA

As part of her fundraisin­g drive for ‘Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland’, Monica Gahan is organising an afternoon Garden Tea Party and plant sale in Kinsella’s Kinbark Nurseries, Camolin, on Saturday, June 3, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
