WEXFORD

It was a busy week in the club, with the beautiful summer weather bringing out a large number of golfers who participated in various competitions and casual golf.

However, it was great to see so many academy golfers taking part in Sunday’s session which give some of our young members their first taste of real golf.

In total, 70 young people took part in the on-course session and great credit is due to Liam, Darren, Yvonne and Paddy and their helpers for organising this initiative. These are our golfers of the future.

Our Seniors’ section recently held their day out to Woodenbridge Golf Club. In total, 44 travelled and played, with Seamus O’Byrne coming out on top with a score of 35 points. In second place was Seamus Sills on 34 points, with Joe Scott in third place, also on 34 points.

Fourth place went to Paddy O’Reilly with 33 points, and the evergreen John Lacey took fifth place, also with 33 points.

Tuesday’s Seniors scramble was won by the team of M. Byrne, T. Byrne and P. C. Browne with 44 points. In second place were Martin Frehill, John Lacey, Pat Birney and Seán Furlong on 45 points, and in third place came Phil Roche, Pat Furlong, Phil Murphy and Pat Roche.

Wednesday’s competition was an 18-hole open stableford event. The winner with a score of 41 points (back nine) was Liam Morris. Second place went to Chris Murphy, also on 41 points (back nine). In third place was Joe Moore, also on 41 points.

The gross prize went to Peter Byrne on 31 points. The visitors’ prize was won by Ann Leonard from Dun Laoghaire who had a score of 34 points. The veterans’ prize was won by John McGarrigle with 38 points.

The weekend’s competition was the annual Pettitt’s SuperValu golfer of the year qualifying competition. Played over two days, Saturday and Sunday, a huge entry took part.

The leading qualifier was John Bolger. Congratulations to John and the other 31 qualifiers who now go to matchplay format to contest the golfer of the year. Many thanks to Pettitt’s SuperValu for their continued sponsorship of this event.

The latest winner of the Joker draw was Phil Roche. With big money now on offer in the Joker draw, you cannot win unless you are in, so for €2 give yourself a chance to win.

Next weekend we will have our Captain’s prize and our chef, Tommy, is offering special deals on meals for all who wish to dine in the club.

Our Barton Cup team unfortunately went down to Callan on Sunday. However, credit is due to the panel and team management of Pearse Frawley and John Cotter for the effort they have made.

ROSSLARELADIES

Saturday was our first major of the season, namely lady President Fionnuala Kielthy’s prize of a singles strokes competition.

Fionnuala was a great ambassador for the club when lady Captain in 2000. To show how members were determined to make this a memorable day for Fionnuala, 72 ladies played in what can only be described as a continual downpour.

Máire Farrell, with her usual determination and grit, won with 71, scoring five pars on the back six holes. She just beat Mairéad Esmonde who came second with the same points.

Our lady Vice-Captain, Norrie Goff, came fourth with 75. Norrie has been having a great run and also won on Tuesday with six up in the v. par competition. Norrie has dropped from a handicap of 20 to 15 in a period of ten weeks!

On Saturday evening we all had a lovely evening with Fionnuala, her family and friends. She presented the most gorgeous prizes and gave a lovely speech.

Fionnuala is also remembered for her work with Aer Rianta, bringing many golfers to Rosslare, Wexford and St. Helen’s. Golfing is a family tradition for Fionnuala, with even her grandchildren playing in Rosslare.

Our Senior Cup team played against Woodenbridge on Saturday in Athy. They then went on to play in the plate against Castlecomer in the afternoon.

The Junior foursomes were narrowly beaten in Enniscorthy against Waterford Castle, but well done to both teams on valiant performances.

Best of luck to the Intermediate Cup team playing in the third round on Monday, June 5, against New Ross in Faithlegg, managed by Niamh Byrne and Vandra Deacon.

We would like to pass on our sympathy to the family of Vera Noonan who died on Thursday, May 18. Vera was much loved by so many members of Rosslare Golf Club. May she rest in peace.

NEWROSSSENIORS

The earlier starting time meant that we had relatively cool conditions for our outing last Thursday before the warm sunshine came through in the afternoon. It seems that at last players are getting the message and turning up in good time for the draw at 9.40 a.m.

Fourteen teams faced the starter on a course in immaculate condition with lush fairways and lightning-fast greens - compliments to Seamus and the course staff for their hard work in maintaining it to such a high standard.

As per usual competition was fierce among the group, all looking for the whiskey or at least a few balls. With three prizes up for grabs and a chance of nearest the pin it was all to play for.

However, despite the almost perfect golfing conditions only one team broke the 90-point barrier and deservedly took the first prize and the bragging rights.

Martin Forristal (19), Bill Hurley (20), Jamesie Wallace (22) and Tom Furlong (25) shot the winning score of 91 points. In second place on 88 points were Tony Harford (13), John Joe Cullen (18), Paddy Mahony (19) and Martin Hartley (22), whilst John Hosey (14), Aidan Kent (20), Kenny Irwin (22) and Jamesie Murphy (23) finished in third spot with 87 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Ollie Brennan on the ninth hole and John Joe Cullen on the eleventh.

Our next away outing is to Waterford Castle Golf Club on Monday, June 12. All-in cost is €25 including a contribution towards extra prizes.

We play in their open Senior singles competition (fee €20) and also play our own four-person team event as well. All four scores will count in that so everyone had better sharpen up their game before Monday week.

On the board for June are John Murphy, Dick Cahill and Denis Kirwan.

NEWROSS

It’s a busy time out on the course lately with many different events taking place. Perhaps it was the recent spell of fine weather that enticed so many to partake on weekdays and weekends respectively.

Certainly, there was something for everybody with singles, fourballs and scrambles taking pride of place.

In the monthly open singles played on May 18, the top prize went to a visitor, Vincent Byrne (22) from Enniscorthy, who brought in an untouchable 40 points. In second place was Eamon Delaney (16) with 37 points, and Aidan O’Connor (19) took third with 36 points by virtue of a better tally over the last seven holes.

The Tuesday evening fourball on May 25 was won by M.J. Cullen (18) and Richie Aylward (18) with a terrific score of 38 points over the 14 holes played. In second place were two players chopped a shot because of being previously in the winners’ enclosure.

Willie Whitty (now 16) and John Murphy (also 16) took the runners-up position with 36 points. Seán Murphy (16) and Pat Whelan (17) took third with 35 points by virtue of a better last nine.

If any member or group of members would like to sponsor a Tuesday evening competition please contact the Captain, Peter Goggin. This Tuesday evening’s outing (May 30) will be sponsored by a club member.

This weekend sees the running of Peter Goggin’s Captain’s prize with qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday, and the top qualifiers battling it out on Sunday to take home this much-coveted prize.

Peter has proved to be an excellent Captain and a great ambassador for the club, and he deserves all the support he can get on his Captain’s weekend when hopefully the weather will be kind to all the participants.
