Historic event at Athenaeum
ON SATURDAY, June 3, Enniscorthy Athenaeum made history yet again as it hosted its first ever wedding ceremony at it’s newly restored premises. Beautifully decorated for the occasion with fabulous floral displays and earthy garlands of white flowers and green foliage adorning the iconic staircase creating an outdoor medieval woodland illusion cleverly crafted and arranged by Nancy and Julie Ashdown.
At the front entrance members of the Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment society clad in Irish Volunteer and cumann na mBan uniform and 1916 civilian outfits formed a guard of honour for the wedding party.
The bride, local lass Bridget Carley, daughter of Eugene and Gretta Carley of Salville, Enniscorthy, looked demure in an exquisite cream lace dress reminiscent of the 1950s era and totally in keeping with the hay days of the Athenaeum when it was one of the most popular ballrooms in the area. Bridget’s beautiful coiffed auburn hair dispensed the need for any kind of head dress, carrying a delicate bouquet of pink and white roses she sported the most fabulous blue suede shoes giving her ensemble a quirky, unique look as she alighted from Cathy Keane’s Heritage Bus and took her father’s arm to walk across the road to the Athenaeum to marry Martin Swannell in a Humanist Ceremony.
Congratulations to the Athenaeum, Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment society and the Happy Couple.
