Hawk-Eye’s role bemoaned

-

DAVY FITZGERALD joked that he would like to bin Hawk-Eye after a costly intervention at Croke Park on Sunday.

Conor McDonald had a point initially awarded by an umpire early in the second-half but HawkEye deemed it wide.

It was a crucial decision as Wexford were only three points behind at the time and McDonald had a penalty saved shortly after by Colm Callanan.

Galway responded with seven points in a row to seal their victory.

‘That was a momentum killer. We had a point just disallowed by that Hawk-Eye system - any chance they can bin that thing?,’ the manager said.

‘We had the momentum but that’s four points between that and the penalty. I’m not saying we would have won the game. But playing the likes of Galway, two things - one, you can’t give that seven or eight points that we gave them before half-time. And secondly, it we get opportunities we have to take them.

‘It’s very hard when a team gets a run on you like they did. They brought a lot of forwards out the field and even though we had the sweeper, they still had a lot of room.’

Niall Burke, Pádraic Mannion and Conor and Joseph Cooney made some great fetches that set up points in that third quarter purple patch for Galway.

‘When you have that momentum and you’re looking good, it’s a lot easier to catch those balls,’ he said.

‘I could tell that we were half doubting ourselves at the time. And when you’re doubting yourself, you’re not going to contest those balls the way they should.

‘They didn’t catch a whole lot of them in the first 20, 25 minutes. When we lost our way a small bit they capitalised.

‘If you asked me at the start of the year if I could achieve what we have achieved now, even over two years, I’d have been delighted.’
