Writing entries sought in Kilmore Quay literary festival
The winning entries in a writing competition organised by Write by the Sea literary festival in Kilmore Quay, will be broadcast on the Seascapes programme on RTE Radio 1 presented by Fergal Keane and broadcast on Friday nights. The competition is open to original, unpublished and unbroadcast work in the English language and must reflect the 2017 Write by the Sea theme of ‘Our Island Heritage’.
Entries can be in fiction, non-fiction or poetry and a separate award will be made for each category. Everyone is eligible to enter. Festival committee chairperson Lucy Moore thanked the Seascapes presenter for his generous support of the competition for the second year running. The prose award in last year’s festival was won by Imelda Carroll for ‘ The Vigil’. Imelda said she was honoured and delighted to win the inaugural prose prize.
‘As a writer living in the locality, it meant a great deal to me. A unique aspect of the festival is that the winners get to read their work on the national airwaves on Seascapes, RTE’s iconic maritime programme.’ ‘I would definitely encourage other writers to enter the competition this year’, she said.
The 2016 poetry winner was Mary Kavanagh who commented: ‘It was an absolute thrill for me to win. The trip to Cork with Imelda Carroll to record our winning entries for Seascapes was an experience that will live long in the memory.’
