New €183,000 public park on way for town
WORK is due to get underway by the end of the month on a new €183,000 public park that will also serve as a pedestrian walkway linking Convent Road with Irish Street.
A project that has been in the pipeline since the days of the old Enniscorthy Town Council, ‘Orchard Park’ will see lands at the back of the Presentation Centre and Cathedral opened up and lovely winding walkways installed among the trees there.
While the idea of a nice town walk among the trees will interest quite a few locals in itself, the opening up of the park will also provide a quicker route for people from the likes of Moran Park to get down to Irish Street, making it handier for them to get down to do the shopping in Dunnes etc.
Engineer Rory O’Mahony who is overseeing the project, says that it will have quite a few features including a ‘ labyrinth with planting around the edges, off-path trails among the trees with stepping boards, public seating and possibly some monuments.’
Mr O’Mahony says that the main pathway will be completely wheelchair accessible and that the park will be completely secured and will remain locked from dusk until dawn to avoid any anti-social behaviour.
Contractors are due to begin work on the project within the next month and the majority of ground work will be carried out over the winter. Planting etc will take place in Spring and it is hoped that the park will be open to the public in Spring of 2018.
‘ This is a legacy project from the old town council,’ said Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Keith Doyle. ‘It will be a great way to revitalise that land there and bring it back to life. It was very hard to have that land there not in use, but now we can finally give it back to the people and it will be really handy for residents in the area providing a link to Irish Street as well.’
