St. Senan’s birthday celebrations

-

KILKENNY CLUB, St. Senan’s A.C., celebrated its 40th birthday with a great day of cross-country at its annual open meet on Sunday.

Going to Kilmacow, where the club is based, is always a pleasure as they have the happy knack of being able to combine old-style courtesy with effective organisation.

The whole community appears to get involved - making tea, directing traffic, stewarding, etc.

The net result is that this small village in the shadow of Waterford city is more than able to stand on its own two feet and likes nothing better than opening the doors to visitors.

Conditions were positively balmy for this meet, way warmer than it was for the club’s summer track and field event.

Good numbers competed in all races and the standard was very respectable. The course itself was in great condition.

From a Wexford perspective the medal haul was scant enough. Myles Hewlett of U.S.A.C., competing in the Under-14 1,500m, was involved in the most dramatic finish of the day.

Having built up a good lead over his nearest pursuer, the roars from the spectators as he approached the final run-in told Myles in no uncertain terms that his lead might come under threat.

And so it came to pass. In the final yards Myles and his rival battled it out with neither managing to break the other. Joint first. That will do nicely!

Adam O’Connor (U.S.A.C.) placed a good fourth in the boys’ Under-16 2,000m.

Róisín O’Reilly of Menapians battled gamely down the home straight to snatch fifth in the girls’ Under-16 2,000m.

Gorey athlete Corrine Kenny (S.L.O.T.) placed fourth in the girls’ Under-16 2000m.

Under-8 girls: 2, Saoirse Flanagan (D.M.P.); 4, Jessie Aspell (Taghmon); 6, Kayleigh Butler (Taghmon).

Under-8 boys: 1, Shane Laffan (Bree).

Under-9 girls: 2, Leah Bolger (Bree).

Under-9 boys: 1, Jayden Kenny (Bree).

Under-10 girls: 7, Ciara Wilson (Bree); 8, Ciara Laffan (Bree); 9, Stephanie O’Connor (Enniscorthy).

Vets.: 1, Ger Moloney (St.

Paul’s).

Well done to Senan’s A.C. on another welcoming and well-organised event.
