‘Shanks’ enjoys a fruitful period

-

PIERCESTOWN OWNER Seamus ‘Shanks’ Whelan has enjoyed a very good few weeks, and his fine run continued on Monday of last week when his Piercestown Iron got the better of a battle royal with Ketch Up Sooty to win the final of the Paradise Madison Unraced Stake at Enniscorthy dog track.

The kennel also has had a super few weeks with their flying bitch Collage Jade who won the Munster Oaks in Waterford and won her first round heat of the Sporting Press Oaks at Shelbourne Park on Thursday.

There was a big crowd in attendance for the Enniscorthy and District Chamber’s fundraising night at the dogs for the festival Christmas lighting, and there was some hot action on track also with some kennels hitting in recent weeks. It would be profitable to follow these runners in the coming weeks.

An owner who is enjoying a recent good run is Kilkenny man Ned Freeman whose runners took both semi-finals of the Horse and Hound stake over 550 yards.

His Stripe Mary was a very impressive winner of the first semi, recording a fast 30.05, and then Stripe Pal showed a fine burst of speed down the back to score a good 30.45 and now has a very strong challenge for this week’s final over the 575 yards.

The A1/2 stake semi-finals were also decided, and the Frances Gleeson-owned Elusive Star ran a fine race in the first semi when going to the front off the second bend and running out a cosy winner in a good 28.86.

The other semi went to the Raymond O’Sullivan-owned Tycoon Prince who also ran a good race, coming to the lead off the last bend and running home a clear winner in 29 seconds. This final will also be run this Thursday night.
