Woodsmen win Division 1 honours

THE WEXFORD horseshoes league final was held in Ferns on Saturday, with Woodsmen and Monart clashing in Division 1.

Round one: Chris McDonald and Mick Redmond (Woodsmen) beat John Joe Byrne and Brendan Earle (Monageer), 21-20; Tom Connors and John Giltrap (Woodsmen) beat Mick Sunderland and Mick Sunderland Jnr. (Monageer), 21-7; Paddy Connors and Phil Mahon (Woodsmen) beat Walter Christophe­r and Wally Dempsey (Monageer), 21-11.

Round two: John Joe Byrne and Brendan Earle beat Tom Connors and John Giltrap, 21-15; Chris McDonald and Michael Redmond beat Walter Christophe­r and Wally Dempsey, 21-17.

The Woodsmen won on a score of 4-1, with the final game not being needed.

Monart faced Doran’s Bridge in the Division 2 final.

Round one: Denis Larkin and Eddie Larkin (Monart) beat Dean Collier and Jason Collier (Doran’s Bridge), 21-10; Jim Sludds Snr. and Chris Sludds (Monart) beat John Kehoe and Myles Collier (Doran’s Bridge), 21-10; Mark Sludds and Jim Sludds Jnr. (Monart) beat James Fleming and Damien Nolan (Doran’s Bridge), 21-7.

Round two: Denis Larkin and Eddie Larkin beat Dean Collier and Jason Collier, 21-20.

Monart wrapped it up in four games, with a 4-0 victory.

Big congratula­tions to The Woodsmen and Monart who were both convincing winners - and well deserved too.

Special mention to John Kehoe for preparing and keeping the field in good order for the final and throughout the season.

The National Ploughing doubles were held in Tullamore on Thursday.

Final: Brendan Earle and Wally Dempsey (Monageer) beat Tom Connors and John Giltrap (Woodsmen), 21-19.

We’d like to offer our best wishes to Charlie Christophe­r Snr. who was recently in hospital. We hope his recovery is speedy.
