Rovers are on a roll

SHAMROCK Rovers continued their impressive start to the campaign with a 4-2 win over Crettyard United in the first round of the O’Neill’s LFA Junior Cup at Peter Quinn Park on Sunday.

Willie Dobbs bagged a double for the Enniscorth­y men, with Ricky Dwyer adding to the tally and Jonny Dwyer announcing his arrival in style by netting a 25-yard screamer on his debut.

North End United also chalked up a handsome victory, winning 4-1 away to Garda AFC on Friday night, with Paul ‘Spot’ Murphy scoring a double, one from the penalty spot, and Kyle Dempsey and Dale Flynn also getting in on the act.

Gorey Rangers netted a magnificen­t seven without reply against Newbridge Hotspurs, with Adam Territt and David ‘Swack’ Behan scoring doubles and Stephen Kinsella, Jamie Howard and Joe Bolger adding a goal apiece.

New Ross Celtic chalked up an impressive 4-2 victory away to Ratoath Harps, with Alan Rhodes, Eoin Rhodes, Kian Walsh and Damien Cullen getting their goals, while Courtown Hibs beat Newlands by the same scoreline, with Daniel O’Brien (two), Leighton Gleeson and Jack Hobbs hitting the back of the net.

Corach Ramblers eventually edged out Moyne Rangers ‘A’ after extra-time in a thrilling encounter. Niall Harney and John Staples both netted doubles for the winners, with Gareth McCurtin grabbing their other goal, while Peter Marsden helped himself to a hat-trick and Pa O’Rourke also got on the scoresheet for the Enniscorth­y outfit.

In another all-Wexford clash Tombrack proved too good for Crossabeg, winning 4-1, with Richie O’Hara, James Coleman, Bob Newe and Mick Kelly getting their goals, and Conor Maddock replying for the hosts.

Kilmore United also got a win under their belts as they overcame Knockmitte­n U-20s 2-0 with goals from Graham Healy and David Millar, while Campile suffered the agony of losing 6-4 after extra-time against OMP United, with Paddy McMahon, Colin Nolan, Eric Banville and Tommy Quinn scoring for the Wexford side.

Craig Travers, Matty Kavanagh and Des Wolohan hit the back of the net for Gorey Celtic but they lost out 4-3 to Evergreen FC, while Bridge Rovers lost 3-0 at home against Dolmen Celtic. Wexford Bohs were edged out 1-0 by Ayrefield United, Killbarrac­k United saw off Forth Celtic with a bit to spare, winning 4-1, while New Ross Town were beaten 4-2 by Deen Celtic.

Stoney Rovers lost 3-1 at home against Leinster League side FC Transylvan­ia, while staying on the Romanian theme Real Transylvan­ia proved much too strong for Killenagh Wanderers, running out emphatic 9-1 winners.
