Quinn scores on successive days
JIMMY QUINN from New Ross opened his week on a winning note when scoring in successive days at Brighton and Yarmouth.
Now in the veteran stage at 50 years of age, Quinn is still working hard at the game, often travelling long trips for just a couple of rides.
His wins often come at pretty decent prices. He made his trip to Brighton pay off when he got home by half a length on Esspeegee (5/1) for Andrew Bailey, and he repeated the dose on Tuesday when he travelled to Yarmouth for one spin against most of the top jocks and cruised home by four and a half lengths on Rayna’s World (9/1) for Paul Kirby.
After his high profile exploits the previous week, it was back to the daily bread and butter grind for Pat McDonald (Taghmon), typified by a hard day’s work on Tuesday. He had a total of nine rides, seven at Newcastle and two at Redcar, and one second place was all he had to show at the end of it, on Photonics (8/1) for Hugo Palmer.
He had six more win-less rides at Yarmouth on Wednesday and, to add to his frustration, he had seven booked for Ayr on Thursday and more for Friday and Saturday, only for the entire meeting to be called off because of waterlogging. Some weeks go like that!
On Thursday, Pat Dobbs was in Pontefract for the £30,000 fillies’ handicap and he came up just short, being second on Tirania (5/2) behind Richard Fahey’s Marie of Lyon (3/1).
Jimmy Quinn nearly pulled off a shock when second at Chelmsford on Rouge Nuage (20/1), just beaten a neck by Gold Hunter under Patrick Pilley.
Jimmy Fortune, Jimmy Quinn and Pat Dobbs were all in action at the televised Newbury meeting on Saturday but the only success fell to the Ferns-born veteran, 45-years-old Fortune. He gave a good ride to Fennaan (7/1) in the first to get up by a head for trainer, John Gosden, in a driving finish.
Jimmy’s season has been disrupted by injury and his eleven winners have come from just 89 rides. He is recognised as one of the strongest finishers on the circuit.
Daryl Jacob had just one ride at Uttoxeter on Sunday and Tom O’Brien had three but success eluded them.
