NEWROSS
With the sanding of the greens now completed, the normal Sunday competitions resumed in almost perfect weather conditions. Many thanks go to a number of volunteers who helped the course staff carry out this very necessary operation of coring and sanding of the greens last week.
The lakes also benefited from a clear-out, as did the bunkers which were edged and raked to bring them up to scratch.
The winner of the men’s competition sponsored by the Louis Fitzgerald Group from Dublin was Ger Breen (21) with 40 points. Second place went to Kieran McGrath (11) with 38 points, whilst John Molloy (17) finished third, also with 38 points
The ultra-consistent Michael Ryan Jnr. took the gross prize with 34 points. Category 1 went to Tommy Liston (8) with 37 points, Category 2 was won by Cyril O’Grady (10) with 37 points also, and Category 3 saw John Molloy (17) collect that prize with 35 points.
With the evenings closing in fast, we reverted to a ten-hole format for the Tuesday fourball competition. Brendan Duffin (8) and Noel Dunne (19) came home in first place with 26 points by virtue of a better score over the last nine holes.
Eddie Sweeney (8) and Tom Purcell (17) finished second on the same score (26 points), and Seán Furlong (11) and John O’Gara (18) finished third with 25 points.
From this week onwards, please note that the competition has changed. It is now a nine-hole open event where you can play anytime during the day, Monday to Friday. This is in order to facilitate all players who might like to get a game in during daylight hours.
Split The Pot is doing well and the Saturday regulars were the latest winners, receiving €50. You can have a go for €2 and maybe scoop the pot where the more entries that are in, the bigger the pay-out.
NEW ROSS LADIES
This Wednesday, September 27, the 18-hole stroke is sponsored by Barrow Office Supplies, John Street, New Ross.
There is a gross prize this week and it is also a medal competition. Booking online with the draws at the usual times.
Last week’s scramble was sadly a non-runner because of inclement conditions. Hopefully we will fit it in the schedule before long.
Shorten your Shortgame will start next Saturday as per text message sent this week. The programme will run until December including five lessons.
Get into Golf continues from 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Lessons for October are being organised and anyone interested should contact the Pro Shop.
Junior golf continues at 4 p.m. on Saturdays with nine holes for older children and a shorter game for small folk. Thanks to Mary Kavanagh and Patricia Quinn for their continued dedication to the young golfers.
Junior Cashin and Noel Kehoe are also playing big part in encouraging boys and girls to improve at the game.
Bridge for all those interested will resume on the first Friday of October at 9.30 in the clubhouse.
ROSSLARE
The medal competition was played in Rosslare on Sunday week and resulted in a win for Con Murphy (11) with a 72.
Con, who is generally overshadowed by his more famous son, Paul, played a very steady round. He had a birdie at the eighth in an outward half of 42.
He had another two at the tenth and, despite finishing with an eight, had one shot to spare over John Brady (+2). John had a seven at the first, a six at the fourth, and was six over par after eight holes.
He then played the next ten holes in six under par with birdies at the ninth, tenth, twelfth, 13th, 15th and 18th to beat Michael Healy (14) by one shot.
In conjunction with the medal, a Seniors’ competition was played on the green course. This was won by Jim Anglim (18) with 41 points, four points ahead of Eamonn Goggin (18).

Don’t forget the Seniors (Over-55) Home Internationals are here today (Tuesday), Wednesday and Thursday. Some top players from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales are competing.
Last week the club lost a very prominent member, Teresa Lynch. Teresa has been very active for a long number of years and with her husband, Shay, spent many happy days and nights in Rosslare. May she rest in peace.
WEXFORD LADIES
The results of the Senior competition on Monday, September 18, were: 1, Phil Flood (28), 27 points; 2, Helen McGuire (20), 25 points (back seven).
There was an 18-hole v. par competition held on Saturday and Thursday, September 16 and 21, sponsored by Peter Marks.
Results: 1, Margaret Hearne (16), all square (back nine); 2, Martina Foley (34), all square (back nine); 3, Mary Cashe (24), all square.
Margaret Atkinson (10) won the gross prize with 12 down. The Senior prize went to Delia Brosnan (36) with three down.
Pauline O’Neill (17) won the nine-hole with 17 points. Pauline also won nearest the pin on the ninth with 1m 58cm.
This Thursday (September 28) our Minor Cup team travels to Malone Golf Club in Belfast for the national finals of the A.I.G. Ladies’ Cups and Shields.
The women tee-off on Thursday at 10.15 a.m. in the semi-finals against either Mountbellew or Headfort, with the final on Friday. Everyone in the club wishes the players, caddies and managers the very best of luck.
They have brought a great sense of excitement to the club over the past couple of months and we are so proud of them to have gotten this far. The team comprises Therese Glasheen, Breda Devoy, Deirdre Colfer, Ger O’Brien, Una Robinson, Osnat Manning and Ger Draper.

The competition on September 28 is an open 18-hole stableford sponsored by Carrig Donn.
The final presentation night of the year is Thursday, October 12, for competitions on September 28, October 5 and 12.
Also on the night there will be the presentations for golfer of the year, J.J. Devereux, medals and spoons. Come along and celebrate the close of another successful, fun and competitive golfing year.

ROSSLARE LADIES
Tuesday was the last of the majors of the season - the Christmas prizes. There is always great interest in this as a huge amount of prizes are on offer - usually wonderful hampers, all presented on our Christmas party night in December.
Everyone tries really hard, so that they can be one of the lucky ones making that walk up to the presentation table to the cheering audience.
The surprising thing when the results were computed, was how low the scores were.
Ladies who thought they hadn’t scored enough were suddenly in the prizes. No one scored 36 points.
The weather hadn’t been too bad but the pins were in really difficult positions on the greens, and that was the latest excuse!
This all does not deter from Margaret Brady beating everyone and coming first. She is a newcomer to the club and we are really delighted for her tremendous win - well done Margaret.
Remember, if you want to watch how our course should be played, the Senior Home Internationals are being played in the club on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
We would like to wish the Minor Cup team from our neighbouring club, Wexford, the very best of luck in Belfast on Thursday and Friday in the All-Ireland finals - a wonderful achievement.

COURTOWN
Our new-style winter league kicks off next weekend. Please pay the entry fee of €45 to John Coone on the opening day.
The subsequent rounds will be as per the club diary and the B.R.S. You will be informed of any required changes due to weather etc.
Players have been divided into twelve teams of eight players. For the purpose of the league, the teams have been divided into two sections of six teams. At the completion of the seven rounds the top two teams in each section will play-off in the semi-finals.
The competition is singles stableford over 14 holes. Please include your team name on your card (e.g. Team D) and post in the box beside the computer in the hallway.
The six best cards of the eight will count for the team score each week. To keep it more manageable, the score posted will be the average of the six counting cards - total divided by six.
Each player will be allowed one substitution during the seven rounds. Please inform your team Captain if you are using a substitute. Substitutions will not be permitted for semi-final and finals unless approved by the committee for exceptional circumstances.
If you wish to enter the weekend club competition, just pay the appropriate fee to John in the Pro Shop. The same scorecard will do for both.
If you wish to enter the weekly nine-hole turkey competitions which begin in October, please use a different card. We look forward to your co-operation and hopefully we will have an exciting and enjoyable competition over the winter months.

Ladies’ day last week moved to Thursday on account of all the course maintenance work, and luckily for us the day was perhaps the best of the week.
The competition format was a three-person team and the winners were Mairéad Carty (20), Mary Osborne (19) and Catherine Quinn (18) with 56 points.
The nine-hole competition was won by Catherine Lawler (36) with 16 points. Congratulations to our winners.
