PARENTS/TODDLERS

On Wednesday of last week, the parents and Toddlers Group took part in a ‘Wedding Dress Wednesday’ fundraiser to raise money for cancer research. They also provided coffee, tea and confection­s for anyone who wished to drop in for a cuppa and a chat. They had a great morning and two brides-to-be took part in a ‘make-a-dress’ competitio­n. After all the craic and carnage, a total of €314.11 was raised for the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Dare to Care’ initiative.

SOCCER NEWS

On Monday, September 18, the under-12s were away to Newpark and shared the spoils after a tough competitiv­e match. Newpark went into an early lead but Seán Gilbride brought our lads level halfway through the first half.

The previous day, the Men’s ‘A’ team were away to Taghmon and Mark Brady put them ahead, converting a penalty before the interval. However, in the last 10 minutes of the game, Taghmon scored two quick goals to take the points to the disappoint­ment of the team and management. The Men’s ‘B’ team were also away, taking on neighbours Camolin and sharing the spoils on a 1-1 scoreline. Camolin were first to score but Liam Walsh connected on a great cross from Matthew Rochford to level the scores. The team might rue what might have been but are still unbeaten in three games.

The previous day, Saturday the 16th. the Youths travelled to New Ross Town and well deserved full points with an 8-1 victory. A goal from Nathan Dickson, another from Tom Fitzgerald, two own goals, two from Jamie Dempsey and a scorcher from Liam Walsh had the team 7-0 up at the break. New Ross scored early in the second half but a left foot shot from Liam Walsh cancelled out this near the end.

MINISTERS OF THE WORD

On Saturday night, September 30, Martina Ivory is reading at the Vigil Mass with Ann Gahan reading at the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday morning. Minister for the Eucharist at the Vigil Mass is Noeleen Hennessy with Monica Gahan assisting at Communion on Sunday, October 1.

GAA NEWS

The under-12 footballer­s are county champions for 2017. On Sunday, September 17, they took on St Joseph’s in Wexford Park and after a very tough battle, their tenacity and guts saw them win by a single point.

The previous day, Saturday the 16th. the under-10s took part in the Noel O’Brien Festival of Hurling. They took on Buffers Alley, Faythe Harriers, Kilanerin and Craanford and in the final, lost to Craanford by a single goal.

GAA LOTTO DRAW

There was no winner of the jackpot in the last Monageer-Boolavogue GAA lotto draw and the €160 match-three prize also went unclaimed. The numbers drawn were 9, 20, 28 and 30. The next draw will be at 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, in the new clubhouse in Monageer and the jackpot has been increased to €3,200 for this draw. A ticket only costs €2 and is a great way of supporting your local GAA club.

CROSS COUNTRY CANTER

On October 15 the GAA and camogie clubs are holding their annual cross country horse canter. The starting point is the GAA car park in Monageer and the first horse is out at 9.30 a.m. with the last horse leaving at 1 p.m. Along the way, the various jumps are optional. Refreshmen­ts will be served and the entry cost for an adult is €25 and €15 for a child.
