Creative contributions compiled in new book
THE calm after the storm was well and truly embraced on Tuesday afternoon as members of Wexford County Council’s Arts Ability creative writing programme gathered with family, friends and local writers for the official launch of their new publication ‘Darker, Later’.
The programme, based at Killagoley Training and Activation Centre on the grounds of St Senan’s, is now in its eleventh year and this book represents its third publication. A participant-led programme, it is facilitated by writer Sylvia Cullen. Each person taking part is encouraged to explore their own choice of theme and develop their own voice. Previous publications by the group include ‘From the Hill of the Wild Berries’ in 2008 and ‘Climbing Mountains in our Minds’ in 2012.
This latest publication was officially launched by renowned poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill who likened the writers to stars, each contributing their own glimmer of light through their poem or story. She also emphasised the importance of storytelling, highlighting the opportunities it offers for creative expression.
Over forty writers from all over the county contributed to ‘Darker, Later’, which is a mix of poetry and prose. It covers a wide range of themes from struggles with mental health to everyday rituals; from humorous insights on the quirkier side of life, to dramatic excerpts from the lives of knights and highwaymen.
‘Darker, Later’ will be on sale for €10 in bookshops around the county with all proceeds going to the creative writing programme. Outlets include: Enniscorthy’s 1798 Centre, Presentation Arts Centre and Castle; Wexford Arts Centre, Selskar Bookshop & The Book Centre in Wexford; Zozimus Books Gorey; Bunclody – Steemers.
