SUPER TROOPERS!
ST SENANS PUPILS ARE PROMOTING HEALTHY LIVING
THE entire St Senan’s Primary School community are gearing up for a year of activity as they get ready to tackle the worrying trend towards childhood obesity and get fit and healthy. A number of activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle are due to take place through the school over the coming months.
Firstly, ‘Food Dudes’ is a three week programme which encourages children to try fruit and vegetables. It will see a huge variety of fruit and veg available each day in school to try and in the hopes that they will develop a taste for healthy snacks.
Next, the ‘Super Troopers’ programme encourages the whole family to get active each evening with typical ‘ homework’ that includes sit-ups, press-ups, leg raises and much more over an eight month programme. Pupils will each be given an activity journal with ideas for family exercises and a wall chart will track their progress throughout the year.
Local fitness instructor Eddie Kenny has already started his ‘ boot camp’ in the school, putting the kids through an energetic workout and this follows on from the fundamental movement-in-service workshop that he delivered to staff in September.
Along with this, the kids will undertake all the usual sports activities in school with the likes of Enniscorthy rugby coach Ross Barbour and GAA coaches Paudge Courtney and Aine Murphy putting them through their paces and teaching them the skills of the game. As well as this, all classes avail of the services at the Waterfront Swimming Pool, the Sports Hub and many more. The school’s Parents’ Council are very much behind these healthy initiatives with the Vinegar Hill Run underlining their commitment to promoting physical activity. All of this will hopefully culminate in St Senan’s earning its second Active Flag this year and the students, staff and parents all enjoying the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.
