League title for Clonard/Vols

CLONARD/VOLS 3-2 D’TOWN-C’CUDDY 1-2

CLONARD/VOLUNTEERS Junior ladies’ football team finished off the season with a Division 5 league final win over Davidstown-Courtnacuddy in St. Patrick’s Park on Sunday. In a low-scoring contest, the Wexford town ladies won by 3-2 to 1-2.

It was a close game throughout with only two points separating the sides at half-time. Eve Hession opened the scoring with a fine point before Sadhbh Cullinane tapped in a goal from close range.

The Clonard/Volunteers forwards created a huge number of chances but the tricky conditions led to a lot of wides and missed opportunities.

Early in the second-half Sally Walker pounced on a rebound shot and finished first time into the corner of the net.

Eve Hession followed up with another good point before Emma Goff burst through and blasted an unstoppable ball to the roof of the net.

To be fair to Davidstown-Courtnacuddy, they never gave up and when their centre-forward Carrie Power scored a goal following a great move down the field, it only left two scores between the sides entering the last five minutes.

But the town ladies steadied the ship and closed out the match to win by six points. With the Clonard/Volunteers Senior squad also winning their league title a few weeks ago, this victory finished off a great year for this up and coming club.

Management Patrick O’Sullivan, Paddy Brennan and David Tormey have done Trojan work with this young team since February and are deserving winners of their new title.
