Celebrating a giant of Wexford GAA
In Wexford, we rarely forget those who serve their county with distinction and when it comes to the field of hurling, few can boast service like Tony Doran.
A true legend of the game, the Boolavogue native and Buffers Alley full-forward dazzled many with his skills on the pitch and the esteem in which he is still held among the Wexford faithful was blatantly evident over the past week as over 700 people packed the ballroom of The Riverside Park Hotel for the launch of his new book ‘A Land of Men and Giants’.
Doran was in flying form as he chatted to members of the public and signed copies of his autobiography, which tells some fascinating tales from the GAA pitches of the 60s, 70s and 80s and recounts a remarkably lengthy and fruitful hurling career.
At the big launch, former playing colleagues Tom Dempsey and Dave Bernie spoke of a legendary career which saw Doran win an All-Ireland medal and four Leinster titles with Wexford, finishing All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. He also managed an All-Ireland club medal with Buffers Alley and is also the proud holder of twelve county championship medals.
Doran was blown away by the reception he received at the launch and similarly there was a great attendance to meet the great man as he signed copies of his book at Byrne’s bookshop on Saturday. He thanked everyone for their support and hoped they’d enjoy reading of his onfield exploits.
