Local analysis shows pockets of disadvanta­ged areas

AMONG the ‘most disadvanta­ged’ areas in County Wexford is Taghmon where there has been a population drop of 0.5 per cent to 1,026 people since the 2011 Census and there is currently an age dependency ratio of 37.20 per cent.

The lone parent ratio in the electoral area is 36.75 per cent while 29.75 per cent of people living in the district only have primary level education.

Just 13,36 per cent of the population have a third level education.

17.86 per cent of people are renting a local authority house. The unemployme­nt rate for men and women in the district is almost the same with 27.75 per cent of men and 27.38 per cent of women unemployed.

The urban electoral district of New Ross has a deprivatio­n index of -14.43 making it the second worst in the county.

The town has seen a population decrease of 0.03 per cent between 2011 and 2016 with a population of 3,768 in 2016.

The age dependency ratio in the area is 35.32 per cent and the lone parent ratio is 35.44 per cent. 22.89 per cent of people have only been educated to primary level while 16.59 per cent of people have a third level education.

The unemployme­nt rate is higher for men with a rate of 29.50 per cent compared to 25.44 per cent for women.

With a deprivatio­n index of -13.17 per cent Newtownbar­ry is the third most disadvanta­ged area in the county. With a population of 2,284 the area has seen no change in population since the 2011 Census.

There is an age dependency ratio of 38.35 per cent while there is a lone parent ratio of 19.78 per cent.

24.56 per cent of the population are educated to primary school level only while 18.60 per cent of the population have a third level education.

15.85 per cent of the population are living in rented local authority homes.

The unemployme­nt rate for men in the area is 26.52 per cent while it is 28.32 per cent for women.

In 2016 Clonroche had a population of 1,252 people and a deprivatio­n index of -11.70 per cent. wThere was a population drop of 0.02 per cent between 2011 and 2016. The age dependency ratio is 36.93 per cent and the lone parent ratio is 17.60 per cent.

The unemployme­nt rate between men and women is very similar with 23.91 per cent of men and 23.54 per cent of women unemployed.

The electoral district of Kilmokea is the final area in the county which is classed as disadvanta­ged with a deprivatio­n index of -10.35. The area experience­d a 0.05 per cent increase in population since the 2011 Census leaving it with a population of 853 in 2016.

The age dependency ration is 39.87 per cent while the lone parent ratio is 28.25 per cent.

A quarter of the population are educated to primary level while 18.14 per cent have a third level education.

21.55 per cent of people live in local authority homes which are rented.

There is a slight difference between the unemployme­nt rate between men and women with a total of 23.27 per cent of men and 19.51 per cent of women unemployed.

Of the 20 areas within the county classed as marginally above average Carrick fares the best with a deprivatio­n index of 7.20 per cent.

The area experience­d a drop of 0.02 per cent in population since 2011 leaving it with a population of 1,779.

The age dependency ratio is 37 per cent while the lone parent ratio is 13.67 per cent.

Less than ten per cent (9.67) of the population only have a primary level education while 44 per cent of the population has a third level education.

1.21 per cent of the population live in a rented local authority home.

More women are in employment than men in the area with an unemployme­nt rate of 3.7 per cent for women and 7.47 for men. This contrasts sharply with Taghmon, the most disadvanta­ged area in the county, where the unemployme­nt rate is 27.75 per cent for men and 27.38 per cent for women.

Ballynestr­agh in North Wexford has a deprivatio­n index of 5.05 per cent making it the second most affluent area in the county followed by Oldcourt (4.5 per cent), Kilpatrick (3.42 per cent) and Glynn (3.26 per cent).
