105 and counting for Lizzie!
REMARKABLE LIZZIE CELEBRATES 105TH BIRTHDAY IN STYLE!
ONE of the oldest residents of county Wexford celebrated another milestone recently as she celebrated her 105th birthday! Lizzie Byrne was surrounded by friends, neighbours and family as she blew out the candles on her 105th birthday cake at her home in Castlelands, Ferns.
Born Elizabeth Keyes back in 1912, Lizzie was reared on Station Road before she settled down with her husband James Byrne and created a home at Castlelands after their marriage in 1944. While James sadly passed away in 1975, Lizzie is still going strong 42 years after his death. She is currently cared for by her daughter Anne and also has a son, Tim, who lives with his wife and family in Scotland. A doting Granny, she is extremely proud of her three grandsons and five great grandchildren and loves to hear from them and all they are getting up to.
Lizzie credits her active lifestyle as being key to her impressive longevity and she worked up to the age of 34 minding children and doing housework for families locally. It’s incredible to think of the changes that this remarkable lady has seen over the course of her life, but she still loves to keep abreast of current affairs and loves picking up the papers for a good read.
Lizzie was in great form as friends arrived along with her nephew Noel and his wife Susan and her daughter Anne.
‘She had a ball and she’s still talking about it,’ laughed Anne. ‘She has great friends and neighbours out here and she was delighted to see them. She’s still going strong and had a great time seeing everyone.’
While Anne was unsure whether her mother is the oldest living resident of Co Wexford, she believes that she is definitely in the top two and at the wonderful age of 105 that’s probably a safe bet as she continues to be a great example to us all!
