WexSci to wow with events all across county
EXCITING ‘ WexSci’ events, part of the week-long national science week festival, are running until Sunday, October 19, promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) with exhibits ranging from brewing to space travel.
The county council, supported by funding from Science Foundation Ireland, says there are 27 events taking place in public libraries in Bunclody, Enniscorthy, Gorey, New Ross and Wexford.
These will be complemented with a festival highlight, a special showcase event with 18 exhibits and demonstrations in the council headquarter’s at Carricklawn on Friday (November 17).
There is something for all ages and interests: From It Takes Guts, a demonstration brought by the London Science Museum to cosmetic chemistry, from particle physics to aeronautical science; from CSI forensic science to brewing beer; from space travel to robotics, 3D printing, maths puzzles and designing games.
This year the national theme for Science Week, designated by Science Foundation Ireland is #BelieveInScience.

One of the many events at Wexford Library is a talk on The Science of Aircraft Design with Dr Ronan O’Higgins, at 7 p.m. tonight ( Tuesday, November 14).
This talk will cover the various aspects of aircraft design. How do wings create lift? How does engineering decide on the most optimised shape for an aircraft? How are new materials making aircraft lighter and more fuel efficient? What will aircraft of the future look like? These questions and more will be answered in this free interactive hour-long event.
In Gorey library at 7 p.m. tonight (November 14), Dr Stephen Whelan, from Carlow IT, and Kieran Byrd, from Arthurstown Brewing Co., will be brewing up a storm, talking about the brewing processes from barley in the field to beer in a bottle.
And on Friday (November 17), Norah Patten, who hopes to be Ireland’s first woman in space, will be on hand at 3.30 p.m. to talk about her recent experience in the NASA space centre in Florida.
This event is suitable for all ages including children and family groups.
