Shield double for Oylegate

Mighty Minors sweep Glynn-Barntown aside in style

- MICHAEL HEFFERNAN

OYLEGATE-GLENBRIEN 1-18 GLYNN-BARNTOWN 0-7

OYLEGATE-GLENBRIEN secured the Minor shield double after they saw off Glynn-Barntown in the Wexford People Premier hurling decider in Ferns on Saturday.

In the end, it was a comprehensive victory for the boys in blue, but no one could have predicted the final score after such a tight opening half, with only the bare minimum separating the sides at the break.

The real turning point came shortly after half-time, when the lively Joe Dunne raced down the sideline looking for his third point, only to see his shot fall short and into the far corner of the net.

From here the victors pulled away quite handsomely, exhibiting some tasty hurling given the conditions, and holding their opponents scoreless in the process.

Joe Dunne and Jamie O’Shea were the respective marksmen early on, both hitting two points from placed balls.

O’Shea continued to find the range for Glynn-Barntown, trading scores with Jack Reck, Ryan Hill and Cathal Doyle, single-handedly keeping his side within touching distance at the break (0-7 to 0-6).

Ger Dempsey hit an early score on the resumption, but it was as good as it would get for the Killurin-based side as Dunne found the net shortly afterwards and Oylegate-Glenbrien never let them back into contention.

They finished out the half with ten unanswered points to complete a notable double, with Conor Nolan, Mike Kelly, Joe Dunne and Cathal Doyle all in flying form.
