Sadness at passing of ‘remarkable woman’

-

THERE WAS widespread sadness across Wexford and amongst the GAA community at the passing of Breda Curran following an illness.

Breda, who is affectionately known as ‘the mother of Wexford Ladies’ Football’, sadly passed away on Friday evening. Her funeral Mass took place yesterday (Monday) at St Brigid’s Church, Blackwater.

A member of the Shelmalier Ladies Football Club for 22 years, she worked tirelessly on behalf of the club, holding various officerships over the years including club secretary and club registrar. She was also a very active member of the Ladies Football County Board, holding the roles of county secretary, county registrar, and website coordinator. She travelled the length and breadth of the country with various teams and also worked diligently on behalf of the Wexford GAA Supporters Club.

In November, she was given the highest honour in the LGFA – admittance into the LGFA Hall of Fame.

Tributes poured in for the popular club stalwart over the weekend, with many clubs around Wexford extending their sympathies to the Curran family.

Shelmalier Ladies Gaelic Football Club paid tribute to Ms Curran, saying: ‘Breda will be deeply missed by everyone at Shelmalier LGFC, where she was a valued club member but, more importantly, a valued friend who had a word for everyone, young and old. Without a doubt Breda contributed massively to our club throughout the years, helping out and giving advice to everyone throughout the club, county and beyond.’

The Leinster Ladies Gaelic Football Association said Ms Curran was a ‘remarkable lady’ and ‘the epitome of the volunteer’.

They said: ‘As an association, we are deeply indebted to her work and know that her memory will not be forgotten.’

She will be sadly missed and remembered with love by her husband Jimmy; daughters Bríd and Caroline; grand-daughters Caoimhe and Aoibhínn; brothers Jimmy, John, Ollie, Michael and Pat; sisters Joan, Liz and Mary; in-laws, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.
