VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP MAKE SPECIAL WISHES COME TRUE

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

THE Make-A-Wish Foundation is calling on people across the county to get involved and support their flagship fundraising day on Friday, March 9. A total of 55 volunteers are needed countywide, to give just a few hours of their time to sell wristbands in their local supermarkets.

Since 1992, Make-A-Wish has made wishes come true for a total of 54 Wexford children living with life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. The charity has a huge positive impact on the child and their families, giving hope and joy along with the strength they need to fight a serious illness.

One such child is nine yearold Scott Peacock from Enniscorthy. Scott lives with a condition called Duchenne muscular dystrophy. A genetic condition, it is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Despite the condition, Scott remains upbeat and is a real battler. For this reason, Make-A-Wish were delighted to grant his wish of visiting Legoland with his family. They set off and spent a whole long weekend exploring the interactive ride, live shows, building workshops, driving schools and tonnes of other attractions. Scott’s mum Sandra said it really was the trip of a lifetime for him. ‘Scott and all the family had a ball at Legoland,’ she said. ‘Everything was perfect!’

Children’s wishes can range from anything such as being a princess for a day to meeting their heroes or going on a family holiday and the foundation does it’s best to make wishes come true for as many kids like Scott as possible.

Wish Day will take place across Ireland on Friday 9th March when Make-A-Wish volunteers will be selling wristbands and transfers, costing €2 each, at locations including Gorey, New Ross and Wexford Town. 100% of proceeds collected will support wish granting for children living with life-threatening illnesses.
