Wexford girls draw in Limerick

- U-18 INTER-LEAGUE

WEXFORD TRAVELLED to University of Limerick well prepared for this vital group game against Limerick but also aware that this was never going to be an easy game.

Wexford started well and were in front after six minutes when Sarah Siggins got on the end of a Fiona Ryan free-kick, slotting the ball past the ’keeper.

This seemed to set the tone for the half as Wexford created several chances but failed to capitalise, bringing several saves from the home ’keeper and sending shots just wide of the post.

Disaster struck just before halftime and they were punished when the home side caught the Wexford defence napping, earning a freekick which was well taken and deflected off the wall and into the net.

Things got even worse in the second-half when the home side scored again to take an unlikely lead and, from a position of control, Wexford found themselves chasing a game that they should have led comfortably.

However, they showed character and resilience and pressed in search of an equaliser.

Twelve minutes from the end, Jessica Devereux scored to bring the sides level.

Wexford had chances in the closing stages to snatch a winner but, in the end, they had to settle for a point.

This means both will need to win their final games to have any hope of progressing to the semi-finals.

Cork beat the MGL 1-0 in their fixture so the Rebel county qualify, leaving all three of the other sides to battle for the second qualifying position.

Wexford face the MGL (Dublin) on Saturday, February 24, while Limerick face Cork that same weekend.
